New Mexico Tech?

I recently received information concerning New Mexico Tech. in the mail. Compared to other top universities, how is New Mexico Tech. Also, is the university a good school for studying mathematics?

We have an NewMexTech dad on the board. You can get a fine education there and the kids are very involved. 'm sure he'll chime in before too long. I have visited the campus and the nearby Very Large Array. I liked it but then again, I like the high desert.

New Mexico Tech is a specialized engineering school. In those engineering fields in which it offers courses, it is pretty good. But if you're looking for a broad-range university, that it's not.

I am planning on going to this school for their petroleum engineering. Is anybody here go to this school or have children that do? If so could you please shed some light on this school for me? Seems like a solid engineering school

WashDadJr is an electrical engineering major there. What did you want to know? I do know that their petro engineering students make big bux in their summer internships.

Hey washdad, I see you live pretty close to my home (vancouver island). Anyways how does your soon feel about the school and its location? How is the student life there?

Regarding Engineering, It looks like a top notch school, how does your son feel about it (curriculum, professors)? And you said their petroleum students make big bux, could you roughly estimate big bux/month? and if you could, please share what you know about there PETE program(national ranking, difficulty, salaries)

future, there is an amazing natural gas boom going on in several areas of Texas , now Arkansas, and very soon maybe Appalachia. If you can spell "gas" you can find a high paying job.

A number of my D's friends went to Tech for college. (They all graduated in May.) All of them are very happy with their education. The physics student had amazing research opportunities starting the summer after freshman year including international research and travel (paid for by the university)-- and ended up at a prestige grad program in high energy physics.

If you have specific questions, I'll do my best to get answers for you.

But if you want to know about "fun things" to do in Soccoro--just remember ABQ is only an hour up the road....and there's always Pie Town.

Hey, for a hiker/mountain biker/rock climber the Gila is a wonderful place. Ski at Cloud or Ruidoso (most years anyway). Lots to do for the right kid. I've spent some wonderful times there. I love it all.

Oh. Y'all might mean other stuff. ;)

what is gila?

The Gila widerness area near campus. Look at Silver City on the map. Rough rugged beautiful remote uninhabited (virtually). My secretary goes everyyear into the backcountry by horseback. The most incredible scenes. Great place. I've camped there many times. Ruidoso is resort-y town in the mountains (not Gila ) as is Cloudcroft. I believe Cloud still bills itself as the southernmost ski resort in the nation.

These are easily reachable on weekends.

Enjoy these shots. <a href="http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Gila+wilderness&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2%5B/url%5D">http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Gila+wilderness&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2</a></p>

more <a href="http://www.explorenm.com%5B/url%5D">www.explorenm.com</a></p>

thanks looks like a nice place.

Tech is a pretty specialized place for just the right kid. This is one school you really should visit before deciding. The campus is beautiful, Soccoro is not. You will need a car to get anywhere. Outdoor types will find plenty to do, others not so much.

Very specialized. The only place in the US with a degree program in explosive science.

WashDadJr is a nerd's nerd. The only three schools he really wanted to get into were MIT, Caltech and NMT. NMT made the list after a 2-day visit where he got to see undergrads in labs doing stuff. The Very Large Array and the Energetic Materials Research Center (they set off a car bomb every Tuesday afternoon) were bonuses, as is the University's policy of paying undergrads to work on research projects. Since his high school focus was as we say, a little fuzzy, invitations were not forthcoming from Tech or Tech, so now he's going to Tech on scholarship. WashMom and I like the scholarship part.

There's not much to do in Socorro, and a lot of students go home to Albuquerque on the weekend. WashDadJr sometimes goes home with his roommate but he is more likely to spend his weekends playing LAN-based computer games or going camping in the mountains west of the school.

Well I am looking for a petroleum program, and as a Canadian Citizen the costs can be extermly high (tuition, fees). So it is between New Mexico Tech and Montana Tech, and I am really leaning towards NMT because the tuition is cheaper and they are offering me a transfer scholarship. I will have to pay about $6000 for tuition and fees, and I plan on living in an apartment for cost reasons.

I hope with summer internships that I will be able to fund my education rather easily, but I still do not know an estimate of what NMT intern students make/month/

Should be something here. <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22New+Mexico+Tech%22+students+summer+internships+petroleum+engineering&btnG=Search%5B/url%5D">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22New+Mexico+Tech%22+students+summer+internships+petroleum+engineering&btnG=Search</a></p>

Your son goes home to Washington on weekend? What!!?

He goes home with friends to THEIR home in Albu.
