got it today by fedex!!! yayyyy!
what exactly are the substance free dorms? are they just places where nobody drinks and smokes, or are they actually anti-smoking/drinking

Yayyy for you axel ! ;) this means that my romanian RD buddies will maybe get their packages tomorrow? hope so

and yes, sub-frees are places where students should go if they are particularly against smoking and alcohol. I do have the feeling that students who have nothing against the "substances" try to get in sub-free just to enjoy a sure quiet good night's sleep though... maybe after a bit of intoxication, elsewhere....

i called about the single-sex area preference ranking, and the office told me that the question does refer to the category of the question (like philntex originally said).

i was just really worried because i don't want to live in a single sex area...

so if i'm not a vociferous anti-tobacco/alcohol campaigner i should probably not choose a substance free dorm, is that right? i mean it's not like the people in non substance free dorms are all drunkards and drug-addicts...

axfr - no, of course not, haha. But a non-sub means that if your roommate is doing crack and alcohol and going nuts in your room, it's easier for you to justify you want your way (i.e. no subs) since you two are in a non-sub dorm after all, know what i mean?

ok... so what kind of dorm are you guys going for?

oh and aren't substances illegal? i mean in the matriculation thing i received today, they seem to make a big deal about alcohol and federal law and stuff. so if it's illegal, why are there substance dorms? does princeton just tolerate underage drinking/use of drugs?

i'm wondering that too axel...

i think i'm going for non-sub. As far as I'm concerned, drinking and partying have their own spaces, dorms are for sleeping/being generally at least hygenic and safe (pillow fights, midnight snacking, darts, clothes everywhere etc. are of course fine :):))

So which of the dorms are single-sex and what are the benefits of ss?

whoa, guys. there's a misinterpretation about sub-free going on. Sub-free is simply for those who don't want to have those substances in their living environment (although it's quite reasonable to assume that some, and perhaps many, of those who choose sub-free are in fact anti-underage drinking or anti-alcohol). So...don't think you're going to get preached to or whatever if you walk into or live in a sub-free dorm. It's just a matter of not wanting to have to deal with certain situations or substances or whatever within your living environment. And from what some students have said, many non-drinkers don't even choose sub-free, so it's really just a toss-up. Do what you think will make your living situation the best next year :)

There are not "substance dorms" per se, but sub-free dorms are more of a lifestyle choice than choosing non-sub-free. When you go there, you are committing yourself to not bringing illegal substances into your dorm. If you're caught underage drinking or smoking or doing stuff anywhere, of course you'll be disciplined. Sub-free is just the university making it easier for non-drinkers/smokers and casual drinkers/smokers and just those who'd prefer to party outside of the dorm to have a living situation best suited to their typical lifestyle.

And haha, mea. See, that's what I think dorming should be like. Sub-free, here we come! :D

I'll definitely be going the sub free way, I can't tolerate cigarette smoke - I start wheezing and gasping - and I doubt I'll be drinking that much :p

NEWS:
HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET HAPPY PACKET has arrived! it is beautiful dramatic pause...and BIG :D.

For those of you who have seen the course form, do we have to take a science course first semester? It says on the A.B form "what science will you take this semester". Does that mean I have to take a science? :( If two courses are a science and a writing/freshman seminar, and one is a foreign language, I have one course to fit in the courses I wanted to take in English and music. Go figure...

You'll have to get around to fulfilling the Science requirement sometime sooner or later :p

YES PEOPLE...IT HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!!

I'm so happy :)

Do I have to take it in the fall, though?

It's so pretty :) (the package, not the science requirement)

Not necessarily in the Fall, AFAIK. :)

And yeah the package is pretty but so is the Science requirement! Yes, it really is!!!

So if I was to choose, say, an English course, a German course, a Music course/another lit course and some kind of social analysis course, like politics, would that be considered too artsy for not having a science in there?

Oh yeah, on another note, how are you writing your honor code statement?!

Can we attach separate sheets with our statements? They may have problems with my handwriting :p

yea i'd like to know how to write that Honor statement too! It's not that i don't have any ideas :D, but isn't all you can write a confirmation: "um.... yea, duuuuh, i won't cheat" :p ? Or do they expect us to go on an on about the essential notions of equality and rightfulness and telling on fellow students? :D:D
