Hey everyone!
I'm currently looking for public universities that have good art programs and saw some talk about New Paltz. I read that they have a really great metals program, but how are the other majors within the visual arts department? I see that they do not have an illustration major available, which disappoints me but I'm also very interested in graphic design, so it's all good!

Oh, and does SUNY like OOS students? Thanks in advance!

Yes, SUNY likes OOS. My son is a graphic design major at New Paltz. He loves the school. The studio art majors at NP are amazing. There are so many creative and talented artists there. Feel free to ask any questions and I can ask my son.

NP is probably the SUNY with the best facilities and greatest depth in Visual Arts IMO. My D is a SR. with a dual degree B.S. in Visual Arts/painting and B.A. in Eng Lit. I think NP may be one of the only SUNY that offers the BFA in Visual Arts, as well as BS and BA. The studios for BFA students are great. The depth in courses is excellent as well. It is a great college town and an artisitic campus.

Having not been an art major (I majored in Adolescence Education;English) I can’t guarantee that New Paltz is the best SUNY for those interested in the visual arts, but I just graduated last May, and I can at least assure you that art students seem to love the program. Whereas business or science majors are few and far between on campus, art majors are a major presence at the school, and everyone from the faculty to the students seem more than willing to facilitate their projects.

Obviously, choose the school that is right for you. Still, New Paltz will provide you with an excellent experience. When I was a freshman, I was already thinking of where I wanted to go to for grad school…NYU, Columbia, Fordham…now that I’ve graduated (with a GPA that could easily get me into thoe schools, courtesy of the fine instructors at New Paltz), all I want to do is save up some money this fall and move back there to get my Master’s.

Good luck with the decision!
