New School for Drama Audition Report

Since there's next to nothing about the New School for Drama on CC, (which makes sense, since it's the first year for their BFA acting program) I thought that I'd post a report detailing my audition for anyone searching for info in the future.

First, there was a prescreen. I had to submit three videos: 1) A 90 second contemporary monologue. 2) A 2 - 4 minute scene with a partner. 3) A 1 minute video of "you being yourself."

So, I submitted these and received a callback for a live audition via phone call. It was a lot of work, putting all of these videos together, but it was certainly worth it. I auditioned in front of a panel of two women who were incredibly fun and inspiring to work with. At the live audition, they asked for one contemporary monologue. I did my comedic, and they asked if I had anything else contemporary, so I did another one of my contemporary monologues, a dramatic one this time.

They took the time to work with me on my dramatic monologue. We did an exercise in which I sat opposite one of the auditors and imagined that I was in a coffee shop discussing the circumstances of the situation. I was told that if it escalates, that's fine, and if it doesn't, that's also fine. Then after about 30 seconds I was supposed to start my monologue. I did this and they asked me what I learned.

After this, we discussed the school and the program a bit. They were really kind and relaxed, and just enjoyable to talk to. Overall, it was a great audition and it seems like a fabulous school.

My S walk-in for The New School at the NYC Unifieds was similar to your experience. He really enjoyed it.

Interesting that Eve848 had to go through all that work for her prescreen-- but they were also accepting walkins at the Unifieds!

Eve, this sounds like such an interesting program–wish it had been on our radar earlier (no, I take that back, I’m glad we’re done with auditions!). But will you keep us posted about it? I’ve talked to a couple of other kids who auditioned there too and am curious about how it will take shape. Thanks for the post.

It is interesting. There were not many spots and they turned some away. Walk-ins are a gamble. I would guess that people who applied and were screened would have an advantage since they had seen their work and wanted to see them some more.

My son also did a walk in at Unifieds…however, they also said that all walkins also need to submit the videos. He loved the audition experience with them and worked hard on getting it all done last week. In addition, a representative from The New School called me on Friday (she was working from home as the blizzard approached) to see if we had any questions about the submission process. I have absolutely learned to read nothing into anything…

I auditioned for The New School for Drama at Unifieds in NYC aswell, I hope to hear something soon.

At the Chicago Unifieds, Pace also accepted walk ins after requiring videos as part of the pre-screening process. I think it’s inappropriate and unfair…just my opinion.

I can’t say that I disagree but with new and/or growing/changing programs it comes with the territory of trying to bring new talent into a program.

I wonder if someone who was rejected in prescreening would be able to do a walk-in.

Yes, they were accepting walk-ins. I understand that they want to form a class as talented as they can, and maybe one of those walk-ins had exactly what they were looking for. However, it certainly feels unfair. I put a lot of work into those prescreens.

Also my experience at Pace was disappointing, because I prescreened and got called for a live audition, but was cut while a girl who had just decided to do a walk-in wasn’t cut.

Agree with sentiment here. If you put in a policy of doing video prescreens, you shouldn’t then accept walk ins. Otterbein does prescreens but you can’t do a walk in.

I guess the New School could perhaps be cut a little slack since I’m sure its hard to build a first class. Pace doesn’t get that excuse

Coastal Carolina and Texas State accepted walk-ins as well and they required pre-screen. I noticed UArts did not accept walk-ins.

glassharmonica-Texas State did allow someone to a walk-in after they were rejected for their pre-screen.

Of course, UArts never required a pre-screen this year…it was optional. If it’s true that Texas State allowed a walk-in audition for a student previously rejected for their pre-screen, that is unconscionable…my opinion only. No wonder there was a sign on their door at Unifieds apologizing for leaving so early. Parents would have stormed the door armed with that information. Broadway95, I’m not doubting the accuracy of your comment. I just hate to think a school would do that.

First off, thanks to everyone who applied to and auditioned for The New School for Drama BFA.
You’re correct that applicants pre-screened were guaranteed auditions, whereas walk ins were not.
Also, all walk ins do need to submit the same video material to be considered for acceptance.
I apologize if there was any confusion or seeming inequity in the process. We are always interested in refining the admissions system to allow us to see potential students at their very best.

ParkerNSD…is it too late to submit an application if they did a walk-in at Unifieds?

Photomom: No, it is not too late if we’ve seen them.
All walk ins would have already started the New School application before auditioning, so they would need to complete that, plus upload the Slideroom media portion.
More information on the website and of course feel free to contact our Admissions office with any questions.

Thank you!

The auditions for some of these programs are very competitive, and you can’t fault folks for working hard to find any way to get in. A program might have some respect for someone who although rejected in the pre-screening, still comes to Unifieds and asks for a walk-in audition. That is someone who is really showing their commitment to the program. That is the sort of person who is going to be succesful with the competition involved in pursuing an actual acting career.

We need to be sure we start telling applicants and parents about this “loophole” that exists, so more can take advantage of it.

Did anyone do a skype audition with the New School for Drama last year? My daughter is considering doing early action and they offer skype auditions. I don’t know if we can fly to NYC to do a live audition, so any info is appreciated!
