Rice gets $25 million gift for new building | Prime Property | a Chron.com blog

Excellent news :)

Also, looks like future psych majors may be able to more often escape the basement of Sewall.

@RedSeven: Hi! Are you a psych major at Rice? If so, how is the psych program? My daughter has just been accepted to Rice, and she plans on majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business. Thanks for any info!

I’m a prospective psych major, and I can say that the psych department here is really good! My professors so far have been outstanding and there are always ways to get involved in research and whatnot.

@FallenAngel9: Thanks! Aren’t you a current Rice student? Are you thinking of changing your major to Psych or had you not decided on a major yet? Will construction on the new Social Sciences building be anytime soon? Thanks for any info!

That is correct! I haven’t declared a major yet, but at the moment I’m planning a double major in psych and something else.

I’m not sure when construction will begin, but I know there was an article in the Thresher about it if you want to look for that online. Sorry I can’t help you there!

About time! Does anyone know when it will actually be built?

According to this ([Rice receives $25 million naming gift from alumnus Robert Klein for a new social sciences building](http://news.rice.edu/2012/03/23/rice-receives-25-million-naming-gift-from-alumnus-robert-klein-for-a-new-social-sciences-building/)) they’ll be deciding construction dates soon, so I don’t think they know when they’ll have it done yet.

That said, I’m a senior psych major so I can try to answer any questions you or your daughter might have about the major. As FallenAngel9 said, the professors are really awesome, especially some of the new hires that I have had recently. I’ve been involved in research here since my spring semester freshman year and have been able to really develop all the skills needed to do research in psych. It’s also a pretty flexible major so I have been able to do a lot of other things here, like double major and study abroad.

Side note: while a new building sounds great, I would hate to have to walk all the way over to that quad when Sewall is so close and convenient. Then again my lab is one of the few not in the basement so I might be biased haha. But really, I basically live in Sewall between classes and lab and I would miss it.

@sffhgoalie73, I recall reading somewhere (can’t find it now) that the university is planning to move all the social sciences departments to the new building except for psychology, which will remain in Sewall. So, you may have your wish after all!
