New Student Volunteer Day?

Is this one really mandatory? I'm an incoming freshman and I have a work study interview on that day...

Well, you have to sign a waiver to go, so I’m guessing you can just not sign the waiver if you don’t want to take part.

I’m actually wondering how many of the “mandatory” events are actually required to attend. I can see why the floor meetings would be actually mandatory, but the New Student BBQ? The Zeitoun discussions? Really?

It’s not mandatory, just like alcoholedu wasn’t.

on the bookmark they gave us, it said "be sure to attend these -mandatory - events: " although my friend made the good point of wondering how they’d enforce this type of thing and what they’d do if you didn’t show up. probably nothing, i have an interview on volunteer day too, and since it’s the only one i have i’m not missing it lol.

As long as you and your roommates don’t answer the door when your RA comes knocking, you’re good. Last year, my roommates and I slept through the whole thing. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have gone on the principle of the event being labeled as mandatory.

I’m appalled at such blatant attempts to get their attendance numbers for these events up, even more so that they tell CBS that those students signed up for it. It’s almost as though they weren’t confident about the event to begin with. Those students should be there because they want to be, not because they think it’s mandatory.

In any case, it’s not like those who volunteer are doing the “community” much good. The people from my dorm went to a well-endowed elementary school to build benches and plant trees instead of beautifying at an inner city school. Those who cleaned beaches went to private beaches in Malibu instead of the public beach at Santa Monica, where trash pickup is actually needed.

Apologies for the rambling…Anyway, if they try to make you go, give them **** about “Volunteer Day” not really being “volunteering” and threaten to file a harassment suit if they keep trying to pressure you into it.
