New to Fordham

I don’t know much about Fordham at all. I was researching schools and I came upon Fordham. I really liked what I read and I’m applying to their business school. I have some questions about the school and program.

Will it be a match or reach for me using only just GPA and SATs, 3.58/4.0, 1400?

How does a minority(Korean) fit in at Fordham?

Is it “Clichy”? No clue how to spell that word.

How are the intramurals there?

How are the dorms? (crappy, nice, suite-style, coed, etc)

How is the campus dining halls?

Thanks for the help and sorry if my questions are vague and whatnot. I checked some other sites (College *******) and they weren’t too helpful.

Match. 2. Its a diverse campus. You will be fine. 3. No. 4. Excellent in every sport and highly competitive. 5. Interesting, diverse, some new, some old w/ character, some themes, all co-ed, freshmen dorms are separate from upperclassmen, some have suites/quads. 6. Dining is fine, much improved over the past 3 years. Lots of variety. Yes its college food, but its really not that bad.

Fordham diverse? lol i call NYU diverse

thanks seafoodlover, you hit the nail on the head.

You are welcome. No one ever stated that Fordham was NYU. But it is diverse in relation to its applicant pool and more diverse than many of its peer group of schools.

I concur with seafood's answers. All freshman dorms are dorm styled as opposed to suites or apartments.

Ah.. someone told me at Fordham they have freshman dorms that are for 3 or 4 people rather then just the common 2 person dorms. Diversity isn't that big of an issue with me because I figure no matter what school I go to I'll find a group of friends. I really like what I've learned about Fordham and it's probably in my top 2. All I have to do is hope I get in so I can check out the school in the spring and make my final decision.

Yep. Depending on the dorm, the configuration changes. The vast majority of freshmen are in doubles, I think. They have integrated living centers as well which are theme based dorms.

I never commented on the amount of people just merely that they were all dorm style.

Question to fordhamgrad23 and seafoodlover, I really need a bit of money to attend Fordham University. What kind of stats like GPA and SAT wise do i need to earn merit aid and how well does fordham match your need? Also how much work is Fordham academically for business? I've read that Fordham is tough work wise. I don't mind working hard, I'm just curious about this. Thanks :) u guys seem to know a lot about Fordham

Oh fordhamgrad I wasn't saying that you said that they were all 2 people or anything. I was just curious because I've never heard of dorms with more then 2 people.

I'm a freshman, and so far, I feel that Fordham really emphasizes writing. I can't tell you how many hours I spent writing essays for various courses, but it really pays off. I saw a major improvement in my writing, especially when it comes to forming arguments. Occasionally, you will get into a class that has homework that is optional, and that really helps time management wise. But apart from that, in you decide to come to Fordham, you WILL work your tail off.

Hm ilysaber14 how many hours of sleep do you get a day? And how many hours of work do you do in week day and how much in a weekend.

i get my usual 6 and a half hours of sleep, its rare for me to stay up late doing hw, cuz i do most work a little ahead of time. HW levels seemed to be seasonal. When you approach midterm and finals weeks, the work really starts to pile up and you have to spend every free moment studying and writing research papers. But otherwise i do about 2 hours of hw a night. Then again, i was taking a math course that i theoretically took in HS (Calc II).
But there are other poeple that do pull all nighters. I knew this person that commutes to school, and literally spent the entire night in the library writing a research paper.

Every school is different and every student is different. But lets say this much, I know kids at some prestigious state schools that are hard to get into, but basically goofed off all semester and partied, weren't very challenged in class and still pulled essentially straight A's or very close to that in huge classes. Fordham is not that way. Its an academic school. There are parties, but if you over indulge, it will catch up with you and you will suffer severe consequences in your workload and grades. A lot of Fordham profs are very difficult graders. You better prepare to come to school to work really hard and bust your rear end for even decent "B" grades. Many profs have a heavy "C" curve in their classes.

If you are lazy and spend too much time on video games or just lolling around and procrastinating, even if you are not partying or drinking, you can still get hammered.

Its a great school. But you better be ready to work.

I agree with ilyasaber. Its really intense right before midterms and finals. Grading is pretty difficult and apparently there is a bit of deflation. Fordham technically wants every class to be curved to a C+ but many profs. don't really adhere to this.

One thing I found interesting is something I found out yesterday. My friend has a 2.97 gpa and is ranked in the top 52% of the class. My gpa is higher than his (and is pretty good), and I'm only in the top 40%.

So that means 52% of the class has around a 3.0 gpa and higher. That seemed high to me.

I know schools that hand out A's like candy. Some of them are top30 schools. Some schools only require freshmen to take 3 classes per term, and in one case, which was an Ivy, they had NO term papers the first term. Fact.

I am not saying Fordham is the toughest academic environment, only that its challenging and you have to work for your grades.

There are many schools that are highly selective in admissions but fairly easy going once you get there.

rainoffire87, this is a little off topic, but how did you find out your class rankings? I've looked in OASIS, but I've never seen the rankings anywhere on there.

The coursework load, though, really does depend on the professor. Just this past fall I had a professor who gave quizzes and expected response papers literally every day we met for class. Then I had another prof who lectured all the time, didn't really discuss the assignments all that much and only gave one paper to do. In general, the academics are challenging, but not so that you spend every waking hour studying.

wow, that certainly is interesting seafoodlover. well, it definitely feels good to know that fordham prepares us well.

aaabbb-- are you a freshman? if you are, you haven't seen them b/c you haven't gotten them yet. rankings come out every spring.
if you aren't a freshman, you should be able to see your ranking from last spring. it's right under ur grades from last spring.

one more thing, i'm just curious.. for someone to be in the top 52% with a 2.97.. does that mean deflation? inflation? i honestly don't know how that compares to other schools.
the percentage seemed kind of high to me, but in another school that hands out A's like candy, im sure someone with a 2.97 would rank much lower.
