I have a friend - her son is probably caliber of a D1 or a D1/ 2a level athlete in track. He is a junior - they have not started the process. Anyone have any suggestions on how they get started quickly? Any links to previous threads that would be helpful?

Start by checking college results to see where his times might be competitive.
Assemble a big list of schools that meet the following criteria:
His times are in range
He could possibly see himself attending
Are affordable*

Send introductory emails to the coaches at the programs listing test scores, GPA and best times.

*They should be aware that track scholarships tend to be smaller partials. 12.6 mens schollys in a D1 program to cover the entire roster of ~50-60 guys. In any given year 3-4 are available in a fully funded program. Need-base (esp in the Ivies) and academic merit are usually more generous.

Search track recruiting on this forum. You should come up with a number of threads that give you a wealth of information. If you find you have additional questions that haven’t been covered, you’ll find many people willing to offer assistance.

He should be emailing coaches at schools he is interested in attending. I wouldn’t rule out D3 programs either. While they don’t give athletic aid, they do have some flexibility with “merit” aid and often the D3 programs are more competitive than D2, and even some of the lower end D1 schools. Because of the small track awards, he might do better financially at a D3 school.
