This article was posted in July of 2008 so I’m not sure if the exact bags shown is still on sale. But if you see one you like, try looking on the website of the brand who made it. The same link also gives you the pros/cons of backpacks vs. totes vs. messenger bags, so I would definitely read those sections.

Personally, I would stick with a backpack. I had a messenger bag freshman year of high school and it wrecked my back. I tried a cute tote sophomore year, but it was really awkward to carry. It was too big to be a shoulder bag so I had to carry it in my hand. It was like lugging around a shopping bag full of clothes every day. After that, I resorted to getting a backpack. They may not be the most fashion forward, but they are damn comfortable (as long as you distribute the weight properly).

I suggest buying them directly from their official website though. They do make specific backpacks that have laptop compartments. These are aimmed at college students.

In highschool, I always used a tote, longchamp bags and similiar bags, i stopped backpacks after 7th gade, as did nearly every girl in the grade, but just where I live, every girl has always done that.

I also had a pretty big locker so could constantly go to it through the day, so never had more than 3 notebooks and a book on me at all time, so it wasn’t heavy.

I was wondering in college, why do most people carry backpacks, is it cuz we dont come to the dorms during the day so we need it? Or is it just more popular?

Just as a point of reference, in high school, I never used my locker for anything but my coat in winter. Everything I needed for the entire day was in my bag all day long.

I’m only in HS, but I absolutely love my Dakine backpack. Comfortable, spacious, durable, and pretty cute. They sell backpacks and laptop-carrying messenger bags and totes. Usually have to go online to buy, I rarely see them selling in-store.

A lot of people at my school use backpacks. That may be due to the fact that we have two campuses, so a lot of people have classes on the campus that they don’t live on, and don’t have time to shuttle back and forth to get books. Those that only have classes on their campus tend to go with the tote bags. Personally, i’d stick to backpacks or messenger bags. College textbooks would be awful with a tote bag, especially if you have more than one class back to back.
