New Year's Eve traditions?

I was thinking we don’t have a tradition, but my daughter and I watch the rose parade together. We used to do this in person and now we do it over the phone both of us watching the same coverage on the internet.

Oh I love the Rose Parade! On my bucket list to attend in person someday. As a child I wanted to be the Rose Queen or one of the princesses and still harbor a wish that I could work on one of the floats!

It’s great in person! I went during my freshman year when Michigan was playing in the Rose Bowl on a college package tour. (That was the year Bo had the heart attack.)

Then husband and I went in 2013 - lucked into booking the Pasadena Hilton with points so we could walk to the parade. We got wonderful grandstand seats. We went to the band show the day before and the post parade the day after, which was fabulous.

I also learned that unfortunately there was a NYE tradition in Pasadena to egg pedestrians. Also learned that hotel shampoo gets egg out of one’s coat.

Like for everything but the heart attack and egging.

The Japanese around here drink/eat a soup that has a chicken broth and also has a little green vegetable, thin slice of turnip, slice of eel, slice of abalone, some mochi and some buckwheat (soba) noodles. For the NYD, they may have more of the soup plus chicken nishime (stew). We usually had been able to eat at my brother and SisIL’s on NYD, but can’t this year due to Covid so I bought the ingredients so we can do our own cooking.

Since D was young we’ve played Monopoly and eaten appetizers throughout the night; we turn on the ball drop at 11:45 p.m., in bed by 12:05 a.m… We’re wild

D and I have ID’d several movies we may watch—

We also plan to cook sone fav foods that I described above.

Meet the Ricardos
Red Notice
Jungle Cruise
James Herriot series about UK vet and country life—charming with nice scenery

@Creekland I live with sports obsessed boys, both as fans and participants. Both play college sports.

I myself dislike pro football but I do enjoy watching college football. Well, I actually just read my book while they watch but if the game is exciting I will watch (some of it) also.

We are in LA and usually watch the Rose Parade in person, although not during Covid.

Really an amazing experience and one to try for if you are ever in LA on New Years!

We played games as expected and then turned the TV on at 11:45 for the ball drop with our drinks. Now we just finished reviewing our year for firsts and making predictions for next year. It was a lot of fun. I don’t think we’ll ever change our tradition!

And this year I lucked out (mostly) in the games.

7 Wonders - I won
Countdown (an old NASA space game from my youth) - I won
Castles of King Ludwig - I finished 3rd, DIL won
Racko - I won

Tomorrow we’re going to continue with games getting in Terraforming Mars (with all expansions), Ticket to Ride (Europe), and Dice Forge (with expansion). I doubt my luck will hold, but who knows? :sunglasses:

Happy New Year everyone!

Happy Seattle New Year, everyone! We were able to see the top of the Space Needle from the street and the augmented reality fireworks/light show on our screens at the same time! :boom: :clinking_glasses:

Yes!

my friends usually have a party, and I usually go, but it didn’t happen this year or last year due to covid.

What we did this year was have a quiet, 2 person, night in. Which might not seem like a big deal… but it was super nice and we had just gotten back from a 1.5 week vacation with other people where we were constantly going places. We left the cell phones and laptops downstairs, and hung out upstairs in our game room all night. First, we ate dinner which I had cooked in the crock pot all day. Then we played a board game (Railroad Ink). Then we played a video game on ps4 (nidhogg 2). Then we built a lego set of a picture frame. Then we brought upstairs some sparkling cider and some meat and crackers, and started working on a 1000 piece puzzle. That lasted till about 1am. I also forgot how addicting puzzles are, as we worked on it all day new years day, and completed it yesterday morning.

I got the dice forge expansion for christmas this year! I’ve already played it a bunch on board game arena, but i’m looking forward to actually owning it and playing it with friends!

Which side do you play? We still have to learn Titans. Played the other side yesterday (forgot what that one was called) and I did dismally - finished 4th. Fortunately I had won Ticket to Ride (Europe) right before playing Dice Forge so I can console myself with the fact that others have to win sometime!

We’re still testing out which cards we like, etc., and it was DIL’s + H’s first time playing the expansion.

I’m definitely going to miss them when our game players move to Puerto Rico.

I think I prefer the goddess module. Have you ever played on boardgamearena?

We’ve only played in person with Dice Forge. Sooner or later I’ll have to learn how to play on line because our S and DIL are leaving for Puerto Rico.

With Dice Forge there’s something about rolling and changing the dice ourselves. Pushing a button on a computer won’t seem the same.

Our kids like playing Terraforming Mars online, so we’ll probably look into that one first. We already do Code Names online at times.

yeah, nothing quite like picking a piece off a dice and inadvertently flinging it across the room. My friend gave us these little screw drivers to keep in our box. Lol.

We use the corner of the new side to gently pry it off. One of my lads came up with it the first time we played - not sure if he found the idea online or came up with it himself, but we’ve never had a side fly anywhere.
