New York City ===> Charlottesville

What is the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to get from New York Penn Station to the UVA Campus?

I'm from NYC. The cheapest way I think would be carpooling with someone. Splitting gas and tolls seems cheapest.

Amtrak is pretty easy (straight from C'ville to Penn) but coming to NYC the train is often delayed since the train originates in New Orleans, and travels for over a day before hittin C'ville. (It was about $200)

Fastest would definitely be flying in, but it's really expensive. If remember it being over $300, but I can't remember if it was one-way or round trip. Because C'ville is a small airport, it definitely could be one-way.

How about CHEAPEST?

Other than carpooling...how about Greyhound?

you should check the updated Amtrek and airplane prices first.......

then you can call up local greyhound stations to ask for prices.

I think there's a direct bus from NYC to C'ville now. I can't remember which bus line though. Perhaps Greyhound, Peter Pan?

Another option which might be slightly cheaper than flying to C'ville is flying to Richmond. Richmond is an hour by car from Charlottesville. If you have a friend in Richmond, he/she could possibly pick you up and bring you to UVa.

yea u can fly to new york from richmond for $120 - just need a ride to richmond and back. amtrak is about $75 - but is miserable. i would NEVER take the bus - it would take forever.

Hey Bklyn -

Congrats! Looks like UVA is the one.

Cheap and fun from NYC to Richmond...Just play around on the timetables...

...and fast too. Our trip from DC to NYC the guy didn't stop (restroom on bus). We called him the Bladder of Steel...

Okay, I just called the UVa Club of NY for info. on the direct bus between NYC & C'ville.

http://www.nycshuttle.com/

I've never taken it before, but I hear that a lot of UVa folks use it. It's $149 round trip.

ok yeah - if the bus ride is $150 for round trip u should absolutely never take it. im flying home from richmond to nyc for $138 round trip. why anyone would bus it is beyond me.

Greyhound has 7 day advance purchase of 86 bucks round trip. Has anyone ever ridden through greyhound?

True. You can find really cheap flights to Richmond if your schedule is flexible and there are special deals going on.

Personally, I prefer flying and do so when traveling back to UVa, but traveling by plane via Richmond could take about the same amount of time as riding a direct bus if you take into account the time it takes to get to the airport, getting there 1-2 hours before departure, flight delays which are due to happen, the 45 minutes to 1 hour flight to Richmond, deplaning time, picking up your baggage, and then driving or taking a train to C'ville from Richmond. Supposedly this bus service gets you to C'ville in 6 hours.

it really only takes about 4 or so hours even flying from richmond - but i have a supremely hard time believing that the bus takes 6 hours. i already live closer than nyc and driving about 70 mph it takes 6 or more hours and i can't imagine a bus going as quick or quicker than a car.

even so - id much rather drive an hour and a half to richmond - bs for an hour hop on a plane for an hour and then wait half an hour for my crap - atleast its not sitting in a chair for 6 hours twiddlin ur thumbs.

how close is the greyhound bus to campus?

u need to take the trolley or a cab to campus - its probably around 2 miles.

Hey Bklyn, I'm from NYC (by the way CONGRATS!) Greyhound is TERRIBLE trust me there's a reason its that cheap. With greyhound after the first couple of hours there is a "rest stop" which could last 2-3 hours and you cannot sit inside the bus. One of my friends left from Uva to Penn Station and it took him 13hrs! Currently I take the train (Amtrak) home, its comfortable and it takes about 7hrs. Amtrak is about $160 roundtrip, but if you get a student advantage card its about $130 roundtrip.

Uh....this is soooo expensive. I know this is gonna sound awful of me...but i found a Chinatown bus service for 35 bucks round trip to DC and a little more to Richmond. What do i make of that? Can i use that and go from those cities to Charlottesville by way of something else?

..lol Yea I feel your pain Bklyn, ummm I'm not too familiar with the Chinatown bus service, but you should definitely look into it more and try it, to see what works for you.

you might as well just drive down bro - lol u'll just pay for gas
