New York Times article on women's colleges

Perhaps we'll see this enterprising Miss Smith at Smith!

While I didn’t really like her article that much, I found the many comments very interesting. There’s a good debate going on about the pros and cons of women’s colleges with a lot of alums joining in to talk about how much they loved their experience at a women’s college.

Thank you, Carolyn B. I loved the article. I graduated from an all-woman’s college 25 years ago and am living my dream today…so proud that my daughter is at Smith!

When I was looking at undergraduate schools 35 years ago, it never occurred to me to consider an all women’s college. I am so happy for my daughter that she is attending Smith. I think I would have gotten a better education and have had a better all around experience. I attended Cornell, and although I loved it, I was lost among the throngs. That is not happening to my daughter at Smith.

These days she might get lost among thongs.

Never mind…forget I said that.

Funny, I had been a bit dubious…not hostile, just dubious…about women’s colleges in the beginning. Smith is one of the best things that ever happened for her.

TD, you just can’t help yourself, can you? :)

My daughter’s a first-year. As we went through the whole lengthy process of looking at colleges (we have twins), I must confess I liked the co-ed colleges for my daughter but I could really see the huge potential at women’s colleges. I am thrilled with the experience she is having at Smith.

Huge potential. HHUUUUGGGGGE potential. My D finds Smith to be a treasure house of rigorous academics, superb housing and food, accessible opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities, immediate and sincere praise for achievement, truly wonderful young women with whom to trade ideas and be friends, and unparalleled location. And all of this is for women! She is finding a level of freedom and possibility that she had never imagined, until she came to Smith.

Amen!!!

Another mother of a 1st year here and another fan of Smith. Now if I can just find some place as good for her younger brother in a couple of years!

Carolyn: not if an opportunity for word play is just sitting there!
