I am planning on majoring in clarinet performance (although I may want to change that to a BA from a BM later on, who knows), and now have to decide between Steinhardt at NYU and the Hartt School (University of Hartford) in Connecticut.

Having a college campus is pretty important to me, as is a relatively low class size. I would not be able to survive classes held in huge lecture halls, I'm not known for voicing my opinions in front of large groups of people. The location of the college is also pretty important to me because if I'm majoring in music, I'd like to be somewhere where I'll have access to many different kinds of live (and recorded) music, and New York is perfect for that. As for tuition and such, the amount I'd have to pay for both colleges is pretty much the same.

I am at a complete loss as to which school to choose, does anyone have any ideas or advice?

NYU without a doubt. The atmosphere is so much better, especially for someone who wishes to major in music! NYU has a stranger reputation as well.

NYU for sure. The Steinhardt school is great and it is right in NYC. I think being in Steinhardt will make the school feel smaller in many ways. Granted, there is no real campus, but I think the caliber of the school and the connections you can get more than make up for that.

I know this is late, but I graduated from NYU and if you are looking into Clarinet performance I would say, definitely go to NYU. Esther Lamneck is there and she is an absolutely amazing clarinetist and teacher. I accompanied many of her students when I was in undergrad and even though I played the piano, I learned so much.

u of Hartford–hart school of music! u of Hartford has a college campus and strong program. people who say NYU have no idea what they are talking about. If you need to be in NYC go after you graduate from college.
