Newborn Hearing Screener good experience?

Hello everyone. I have two job offers, one being a patient transporter at Moffitt Cancer Center. The other is a Newborn Hearing Screener position that I’m very interested in, but would require me to travel a little out of the way. I was wondering which job would give me better clinical experience as a pre-med student. Any advice would be very helpful.

You’d have more interaction with patients in the first position. As I recall, newborn hearing screening involves putting headphones on the infant and monitoring results; it seemed like a quick and simple process with mom holding the baby. In the first position, you’d have the opportunity to be a source of comfort to patients; I think the very human aspect of that would be hugely beneficial to your application to medical school as well as to you personally in better understanding patients.

Per at least 2 adcomms on SDN (See: https://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/threads/is-hearing-screener-considered-a-medical-related-job.1271292/#post-19146990), newborn hearing screener is a perfectly fine clinical EC.

However, whether you decide on hearing screener or patient transporter, you will need other, different clinical experiences to give you broader exposure to more facets medicine .

From an admissions standpoint I don’t think it matters at all. I think transporter would actually expose you to a wider range of patients and an opportunity to talk to patients more but if you would prefer to do newborn screening for personal or financial reasons, go for it.

The problem with transporter is it depends more on whether the admissions folks see this as just shuffling a gurney down the hall for a few minutes, more than true “interaction.”

Whereas the work with infants is clinical. It requires more awareness and skill, some training and responsibility of a different sort. More dealing with the patient and procedure than a greeting and a smooth ride.

Neither are impressive jobs but I can much more easily imagine an experience as a transporter turning into the focal point of an essay than I can newborn hearing screening.
