Newsweek article: Amherst vs. Pomona

Interesting article in this week's Newsweek The 12 Top College Rivalries in the Country. Calls Amherst vs. Pomona a top rivalry, calling them both "consortium jewels". Not sure I buy the rivalry aspect but great PR for Pomona. Best quote from the article? "There are moments when I really lose out on the ability to sound all obnoxious and snooty about my education" says Pomona student David Lydon.

You can sure tell that magazine writer doesn't know anything about Pomona College, because Pomona and Amherst are not rivals. For over 100 years, Pomona's big rival has been Occidental College (Oxy). More recently, they have had a rivalry with CMC.

OCCIDENTAL ATHLETICS : Athletic Related Oxy History and Traditions

Pomona College : Pomoniana

Two of the Pomona fight songs feature Oxy as well:

The Mighty Sagehens
The Sagehen backs go running down the field,
To make a touchdown for old Pomona,
Behind that Sagehen line that will not yield
They're over Oxy's line to score!

Tiger Song
We know why the tiger's afraid!
We'll fulfill the promise we made!
And we will win and strip from him
His Occidental tiger skin, we're gonna
Raise that Sagehen honor on high!
And hit the line for Old Pomona
We're gonna fight, we're gonna fight
We're gonna boost that score up
Victory is ours today!

And Amhert's great rival is Williams.

I saw that article. At least it's good publicity for the school. Pomona was also mentioned for having great financial aid. I think that Newsweek was just saying that people who consider Pomona might also consider Amherst since they're similar as far as both being in a consortium... but I had never really heard the two being closely related before I read the article.

When my son was at admitted students day the typical question was which schools are you deciding between? Many had Amherst as well as Pomona on their lists. Rice was another name that came up a lot as well as the Duke, Brown etc

Maybe from an admissions standpoint as a lot of students at Pomona got into Amherst and vice-versa; but there isn't really a sports rivalry between them.

I don't think the article is necessarily supposed to be about sports rivalries, is it? It's more about admissions. Still, I think it's just a journalist's excuse to write an article. I mean, yeah, they have similar applicant pools; that doesn't make them "rivals" per se. We used to say that Pomona has a little bit of "Swarthmore envy," but not "Amherst envy."
