The 12 Top College Rivalries- Newsweek

Just for fun:

The 12 Top College Rivalries in the Country | Newsweek Kaplan College Guide | Newsweek.com

Amherst vs. Pomona??? What happened to Williams?

Army-Navy should be #1. I just skimmed a little bit of the article and didn't see an actual list, but Army-Navy has got to be #1.

I read in a book one time a cadet said if you don't know an answer on a test, just put "Beat Navy" and you'll get a couple points ;)

Bah. Caltech/MIT is kind of a contrived rivalry, IMO. :)

They don't do a numerical ranking. They pick 12 rivalries representing different types of colleges...Old Ivies, HBCUs, etc. And yes, Army/Navy is on there (and justifiably so).

Must have been a slow week for THAT article to make it to press! Of course, there are those of us who will read ANYTHING college-related! :)

Indiana vs Purdue... really? Is that really necessary?

They had to work a bit to round it out. Guilford - Oberlin? And I don't remember hearing too much about the Amherst - Pomona rivalry while I was growing up (as opposed to Amherst - Williams - Wesleyan, about which I heard plenty). USC Film vs. Tisch is cute, although again USC - UCLA might have seemed more familiar. And how about Texas - A&M or Florida - Florida State?

I probably just skipped over it... but UNC vs. Duke anyone? Definitely one of the top 5 college sports rivalries.

Cal v Stanford:
Students seem happy to be at either Bay Area school, and the taunts between them are, according to Julie Yen, Stanford '07, "little more than lighthearted joking."
Lighthearted joking?!?!?! Did this woman ever go to The Game?!?!?!?!

Hey Slithey Tove, it's BIG Game. "The Game" is between those two schools back east.

Harvard - Cornell?

Army-Navy

It is listed, except as Annapolis v. West Point.

And no Hopkins v. Maryland?? Obviously the guy never attended a lacrosse game!

Of course, it's The Big Game, but Slitheytove's accidental misnomer was probably inspired by 'The Play' and 'The Axe.'

I love the Cal Stanford rivalry. Go Bears.

Harumph! I thought my father would have a heart attack during "The Play"--I've never seen him so upset! And of course, they include the video clip during admitted students day at Cal--I had to shrink back in my seat.

And now that we have a Trojan in the house (who would have EVER thought!), I'm surprised that SC/UCLA wasn't included in the article.

while the United States Military Acaemy goes by "West Point" or "Army", the United States Naval Academy never calls itself "Annapolis". The correct terminology should be Army vs Navy. And it is "The Game".

Army vs Navy - is indeed huge and not just in football. They compete for candidates, they compete in athletics, they even compare Rhodes scholars.

Indeed, if a cadet is ever called upon in class - the answer to every question is "Beat Navy".
It is a Rivalry beyond all rivalries.
IMO - if you can show West Point admissions that you can Beat Navy in ANYTHING - they will want you and vice versa.

Rivalries are not bad - they allow the bar to be raised continually.

I've got to say, I find this list a little silly. Obviously, some of these rivalries are very really, but others…not so much. Oberlin vs. Guilford? What? Amherst vs. Pomona? Just because two schools have something in common and attract similar students doesn’t mean they is a great rivalry going on, except maybe in the admissions departments…

I.U. who?!

zebes, a proud boilermaker. <g></g>

Actually, the article wasn't really about sports rivalries...

Best rivalry of all time--good vs. evil!

Moo, Moo Purdue!! (a proud IU grad)

Of course! The article wasn't really about sports rivalries; it was really about nothing more than usual for this "great" reporter. In his best days, Jay M. misses the mark by a mile or two. In his typical days, he just writes about ... nothing.

Next edition might cover the great rivalry between Boston Latin and Stuyvesant.
