Starting this process with S. Here we go again:) only this time new geographies, new places. Plan to visit Duke in April. Do tell, where to stay so that I don't have to rent a car if at all possible, just cab to the hotel, walk around/bus around campus, cab back to airport. Is this doable? Are there any parents on this board who have had to solve this scenario? Thanks in advance....

If you stay at the millenium hotel, they offer free shuttle rides from their hotel to west campus.

Avoid April 13-15 - Reunion Weekend. I would recommend the Washington Duke Inn over the Millennium as the latter is in dire need of renovation. Also, the regular shuttle is free, but the the Millennium's airport shuttle service charges per person - its probably cheaper to call a cab.

The Washington Duke is the one hotel within walking distance--it's right at the edge of campus. 15 minute walk to the center of campus

Yeah, but be prepared to shell out north of $300 per night for the Washington Duke.

Thanks guys. I saw the WDI via tripadvisor, didn't know it was the only one, now I know, mission accomplished:). Will becoming out just prior to the 13th, thanks for the heads up.

If your son is at all interested in UNC Chapel Hill, it might be a good idea to visit it too. The Robertson bus runs between Duke and UNC every 30 minutes, so it's not too difficult to visit both of them.

Duke allows students to visit certain classes. The classes for Spring 2007 are not yet available, but they will be listed here.

When we were in your shoes, I checked the list of hotels on the Duke web site and called around to determine rates and which properties had shuttles to campus. I hesitate to suggest a specific hotel, as I don't know what's changed since then. I found the shuttles to campus very convenient. Parking on college campuses is always a challenge.

Also--ask if there are special rates for Duke visitors.

P.S. I see that Warblersrule supplied a link to the list. Good work, Warbler!

Alumother...I recommend a car rental..sorry but this is NASCAR country although I know some prospectives will do fine cabbing or shuttling in.
I stayed at the Wash Duke on a special Christmas rate but otherwise can't afford it. I do not like the Millennium at the moment. Use tripadvisor for reviews in Durham hotels.
I have stayed at the Hilton, the Durham Hampton Inn, the Holiday Inn Express and the Marriott Courtyard Hillandale location. The Hilton is dated but I still like it because it is quiet. People are pleasant at all these hotels and it is easy to get around. If confused about which location of any of the above, PM me. There is a brand new upscale Sheraton Four Points with a 125 dollar rate internet rate at Durham's South Point Mall. (I was there last week.)
Getting around East and West is easy on the shuttle buses. At first I was put off by the two campus deal (Central is pretty unattractive but will be totally rebuilt within five years). However, East Campus in my view is one of the homiest things about life for Duke students. lots of school spirit for each freshman class and three story buildings that have personality and warmth.
My son is a sophomore at Duke. I stay at the cheery La Quinta Inn for 80 bucks most of the time now and yes this would be a corelation to our tuition outlay! I like it better than the Holiday Inn Express or the Hampton because it is new, it is usually cheaper and the location is preferred for me.

I have stayed at the Durham Hilton on many occasions and it is dated, yes, but the rooms are still of the quality that you would expect from such a hotel chain and it is located relatively close to campus.
