My D is going to be a sophomore and in the process of discussing her schedule for next year. Different options seem to lead to different paths in terms of AP classes for Jr. and Sr. years (particularly for math and science)--should she just take the toughest classes she can? Should she get input from the college advisor (I know, she's just a sophomore but it could be relevant) Those who have seen the process unfold further down the path: what inputs and factors do you recommend she consider?

While my son entered as a junior, we had the same questions and they were pressing as he only had 2 years. We spoke to both his advisor and to his college counsellor and they both gave him great advice. I would advise doing the same as they said it is good to map out your courses even from freshman to senior.

Top colleges look at course work and want it to be the most challenging offered. Thus, if they have AP courses that others take and she does not, it will be counted against her. But, it is obviously better to have an A in non AP than a C in the AP.
Her college advisor should be able to help.
The junior year is considered the “main” year which colleges look at (although they look at all) as they have complete grades for it and it is the year that most take the APs. Mine did take APs sophomore year (5s).
