NHS Question

How important is NHS?
If I'm not in NHS, will it hurt my chances to places I'm going to apply?
(Northwestern, Michigan, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, etc)

It’s so important that my school doesn’t even have that program and we are all very successful in the college admissions process.

There are some high schools at which NHS is a huge important thing, and being the president is one of the hardest achievements possible. There are other schools at which everyone with above X GPA gets in and none of them care. Simply being able to put the three letters on your application will not help you at all.

don’t forget there’s only so much space on the common app or whatever application to list your top few activities…including volunteer work, community service, sports, and other extracurriculars. if nhs isnt a huge deal, it wouldn’t even show up on your application really.

ok good cause I’m not in NHS and I was worried it might be bad

I don’t think NHS helps or not having it hurts if you have a solid app overall. I know 2 very similar students at different HS but have taken the same classes over the years with relatively equal GPAs and Scores and ECs. One not in NHS, one president of her chapter of NHS. Both had similar acceptances and rejections.

It’s just another club. It can easily be replaced with a leadership position in some other club.

In my opinion, Key Club and NHS are really just glorified community service/candy selling.
