NHS Signature Forging

I haven’t yet applied using (or forged) any signatures, but I was just curious whether forging NHS signatures for a high school club application was actually illegal? If so, would the repercussions be something of actual concern to my future or should I not worry about faking signatures?

Um no… do not do that.

I don’t know about illegal, but it is seriously stupid and will suggest you are a budding cheater. Your reputation is too important to compromise. Have someone at your school like your gc verify your participation and sign the form. Maybe include a note saying why someone else signed.q

Bad, bad, bad idea! Steer clear of signature forging.

Yes, it is a crime, and people have been rescinded even for non-illegal activities (Harvard memes, anyone?)

Really? For the National “Honor” Society? If you do lying, crooked, cheating things, you will be known as such and it will follow you like stink on a wet dog.

Any thing that involves the word “forge” is wrong. And dishonorable. And likely to get you into trouble.

I’m NHS moderator. And if I got wind of it, you had better believe you would be out. And that my next step would be to go to the dean and talk about disciplinary action.

Is there a reason why you want to forge a signature? If your parents are causing you issues for some reason, I’d talk to your guidance counselor or NHS officers about it.

My guess is the OP wants to forge signatures related to service/volunteer hours.

OP, if you are contemplating this, you do not belong in NHS.

I’d say it’s okay if you actually completed the service hours and just didn’t get the supervisor to sign… Otherwise, no, it’s not really okay.

With that said, it’s highly unlikely that anyone would find out the signature was forged. Just a matter of values.

For some context to the situation, I do actually have service hours, but mostly from non traditional organizations online. I help out quite a lot with online server management and tournament hosting. More specifically, I help maintain websites around the world for small businesses and online groups. However, it seems like it would be unworthy for me to ask the real names of any of the server owners I assist. I also can’t get a hand signature from anyone I help because I don’t actually no them at all in real life. My idea with forging the signatures was that it would eliminate any confusion and seem more legitimate than simply writing “N/A” for the signature section.

I also just want to say that I help out every weekend with construction projects around my city, but it makes no sense for me to ask my organization sponsor for a signature. For NHS you are required to keep a log with hours of all the work you have done, and to me, that seems like it defeats the very purpose of community service. If I am required to meticulously sign and log every hour, then it would seem that I am spending less time servicing my community than I am focusing on getting hours for the sake of getting hours.

Nearly everyone in my middle school NHS program did the exact same thing, but we still helped out once we were in the organization. Maybe it’s different for you, but our club is more of an academic group with less of a focus on community service.

In your case, I would just explain your situation to your advisors and ask them what proof they would need. I do think you should ask your organization sponsor from the construction projects for a signature though, so you have at least some evidence of what you are doing.

National Honor Society is a nationally recognized student leadership and service organization. It’s built upon four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service

Forging signatures would knock out Character and make your application fall down.

@bopper, I don’t think you understood the question. I wasn’t asking if forging signatures aligns with NHS values, why would I? Clearly the obvious answer is that it isn’t the right thing to do- but again- that’s not why I started this thread. I was asking what the repercussions would be aside from making my application fail.

As far as what other repercussions would be expected:

  • I would hope that the sponsor and principal would contact your parents and let them know what you had done.
  • You might be eliminated from any other school honors or awards due to lack of character.
  • I would expect good parents to be disappointed and enact a punishment.
  • The parents might also be reluctant to trust you if you were shown to lack honesty.
  • That repercussion might last several months or years.

oh, I forgot - a poor recommendation from the guidance counselor to college due to lack of character

@TQfromtheU, I think you’re misunderstanding the situation. I would not be forging signatures because I don’t have service hours, I would be forging them because I can’t get written signatures from those people. Instead, I would ask for their name and permission to write their signature on the sheet. I highly doubt that I would receive a “repercussion [which] might last several months or years”.
