I have already submitted application to one college but the problem is that days after I submitted it my teacher told me I’m not an official member of a community service club even though I’m still a volunteered member for several reasons. The bad part is that for the application I did put this club as one of my activity. Should I inform the college? Will this decrease my chance to get in? Does this violate the honor pledge?
You either did the work, over the period you claimed, or not.
If you actually participated in the club’s activities, considered yourself a member, put that down, and then were told you weren’t officially a member, I don’t know if it’s that big a deal. Certainly you shouldn’t make the same mistake in future applications.
Some might say to inform the college, but I just don’t think they really will care that much if you whether you are a member or a consistent participant. If you had said you were a member of the National Honor Society, let’s say, and you weren’t, that would be different.
On the other hand, you haven’t broken the honor code yet for making an honest mistake, but you might if it doesn’t allow you to leave that mistake uncorrected. It may be better to just send an email or do whatever to correct the mistake.
I think you are ok. You did the volunteer work and at the time you filled out your application, to your knowledge, you were an official member. I agree, if it was NHS or claiming you received a particular award, that would be different.
You did the work and thought you were an official member so you didn’t lie. IMO, its not a big enough deal to try and correct it. I highly doubt its something the adcoms would look into to confirm.
We don’t know what this OP did. He can talk to his GC, rather than ask us, based on, “still a volunteered member for several reasons.” What does that mean? If “a community service club” means, say, NHS, but he isn’t a member, he can’t claim he is.
How can you become an official member? If that was possible, then I think you should become official. Hence, no qualms.
In my honest opinion, don’t contact the school about it. Trying to become an official member would make the most sense. I don’t think that a club will make the greatest difference to your application, so I think that if you get in, it probably won’t be because of that one factor.
