Nhs

So they just released the new NHS members and I didn't get in. I know it's just a school club, but I'm pretty upset about it. I really like to be involved in any organization or club that is available, so it kind of hit me hard that I wasn't accepted into one.

At my school, literally nothing is said about NHS until invitations are sent out -- no one even knows who the sponsors are. There is nothing said about requirements, what they look for in a potential NHS member, etc. which further adds to my confusion of why I wasn't selected. There are no applications--nothing. Either you randomly receive an invite one day or you don't. The only thing under the NHS section on our school website is "'NHS' stands for 'National Honor Society.'" While my GPA isn't exactly that strong (3.46), I'm very involved in extracurriculars and volunteer programs and would have received great recs from teachers.

Any ideas of what I can do or if I'm simply overreacting to something that's really no big deal? I would speak to the sponsor just to clarify their requirements, but unfortunately no one knows who they are..

At my high school, the GPA requirement is 3.5. That maybe the reason why. It’s different with every school. But, definitely check with someone. Ask any of the club council members or ask someone that’s in the club what are the requirements.

Yeah, my high school’s minimum GPA is 3.5 as well.

That is rather unusual that your NHS club doesn’t have any sort of application. In my school there’s an application with requirements that are to be filled out and around 50 people get in. For your situation you can try asking your sponsor (if you can figure out who it is, may need to ask an upperclasman) about the requirements and if there’s any way that you can still get in. I will say that I have heard from passed topics about NHS on these forums that NHS isn’t a big deal at all. The valedictorian of my class applied for NHS and didn’t get in and he still got into Yale.

The thing is, I am an upperclassman. Only seniors are allowed in it at my school. :/

Thanks for your replies, though – they’ve helped.

NHS is kind of a joke. I wrote my admissions essay about how *ing awesome I am (i didn’t say *ing) and how they should be honored to have me even consider joining their club. And then on the actual application where it asked what community service you have done and I was running out of time (this was math class the period before it was due) so I just wrote “I do tons of community service all the time”

I got in.

I didn’t get in at my school because I didn’t have a 3.5 freshman year. I was fine. You’ll be fine, too. Dedicate yourself to something specific to your interests.

At our school the application is one third GPA, one third extra curriculars, and one third community community service, then the eligible members are selected through faculty voting. If I were you I would talk to the NHS adviser or try to raise your GPA.

3/20ish people who got in this year from my school were guys. I don’t know the admission process for my school currently but it seems awfully biased towards females.
