Hi-
I was just wondering if anyone had applied to the high school summer program. I'm applying early decision to the music program, and was wondering if anyone could give me feedback about their experiences, and how competitive it is to get in.
Thanks.

I did the NHSI program in film and video production. I do not know how competitive it is to get into. I can say, however, that I loved the program!

I play violin and was in NHSMI 2006; I definitely enjoyed my time there. For five weeks you get a taste of what it's like to be a Northwestern student. There was never a moment where I wasn't commuting for miles to classes, practicing, rehearsing, attending concerts (including the CSO), or performing. The quality of the teachers varies depending on your instrument and how well you perform. Some of the teachers in the program are members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other teachers have comparably impressive resumes.

As far as how competitive it is to get into NHSMI, it depends on your instrument. I'd say it's most competitive for woodwinds, since Admissions apparently had to reject a hefty amount of applicants in that category.

I forget which dorm we stayed in, but it was next to Lutkin Hall, one of the many halls where students perform. The food was decent too.

Overall, NHSMI is definitely educational, but more relaxed than pressure-cooker music camps like Meadowmount or Tanglewood. However, the program does have prestige that other colleges will recognize. There is also more of a "college-atmosphere" focus that may turn some off. But the opportunities to perform and the numerous masterclasses make the experience worthwhile.
