I went to NIH last year....as a high school student .. out of state.

Its okay, but since your only in high school and most high school kids who do it are from D.C. its not so much fun. You really have to find some good friends who are willing 2 do underage things i.e. watch movies, talk, and hang out. Most out of state kids are college students who are 1. over 18 to go clubbing 2. over 21 to hit up the bars.

A good place to stay is either at the American University or George Washington University.

Thnx Highschooldoc appreciate the info but would you say it was still a fun experience for you, socially I mean. If you applied and got in I'm assuming you liked the researching part ;)

It wasnt a bad expereince Sohni, I assume ur Indian by the name...and there wasnt AS many Indian kids as I wouldve assumed/liked. U really hav 2 be independant cause NIH doesnt care where u are or what ur are doing when ur not researching. U hav 2 find ur own food, place 2 stay, and own social group which is difficult because ur so young in relevance to most of all the other interns. Only about 100 high school students are accepted and like more then half are from D.C. During my 8 week stay I only found myself another guy and another girl who were out of state high school, every other NIH high school intern lived in D.C. And researching isnt really research its just assisting postdocs...doing the ***** work....
Cooljoe u forge connections by sending out emails 2 a ton of researchers and asking if u can research with them.

I was accepted to the NIH internship last year (without any prior research experience) but I turned it down to go to VA Summer Governor's School for Medicine.

I'm thinking that I might apply again this year.

Sheflowers, I applied to my PA Governor's school too. I hope I get to be in the same boat you were in terms of being accepted into both programs. I don't want to jinx it, but if I do (hopefully) get into both I think I might pick NIH.

Any thoughts? Did u think gov school was better than NIH would have been? Anybody else also in/been in this situation?

I'm in the IB diploma program, so I need to work on an extended essay and do many CAS hours. I thought that going to Gov School for a month, and then getting another month off for school work + college applications would be a good thing for me.

Looking back on it, I don't regret it at all. Governor's School was the best time of my life; I've made so many friends that I keep in touch with and it was truly like a dreamland. For my school, only the top student was nominated for Gov School so I couldn't just say no since someone else could have had the chance of going if I hadn't applied from my school.

Also the NIH internship would have been a 10hour workday for me. Since it would take me an hour to get there (through the metro) and then 8 hours working and an hour back. I didn't want my summer to be grueling work.

Yeah, so I just sent my application. Hopefully I'll get in (crosses fingers). Anyone here going to be a commuter? I live about 30 minutes from Bethesda.
