NIH internship for high school students

I am planning on applying for an internship at NIH. I'm not really sure what specific field I want to apply for, but I am looking more closely at the National Human Genome Research Institute and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. I am going to be a rising High School junior this summer, and I just wanted to see ways to improve my chances of getting in. I don't really have any prior research experience, but I am a rising high school Junior and have pretty good "stats". I'll have already taken three APs from my sophomore and freshman year by then (Physics B, Calc AB, and Chemistry) and I volunteer at a hospital, so it's not like I am underexposed to science or anything. But I was planning on emailing some of the Program Investigators there to see if they were interested in me as an intern, before actually sending an application. Is that a good idea? I'm kind of clueless as to how the whole progress works. At each Institutes site, they have a list of their Program Investigators and their research interests. I was planning on just seeing which topics interest me and email the respective PI, but should I email more than one PI. What happens if more than one is willing to take me as an intern? I'm sorry if this seems really naive, but I haven't really applied for something equivalent to a job ever, so I don't want to screw myself up.

i actually just submitted an application last night. i plan on contacting some researchers also. if anyone else attended this program, could you give us some advice?

hmm....sounds cool, maybe ill take a look into that too, though I am more into the humanities, ive got a little prior research (very minimal) and medicine is definitely not out of the question for me. Anyone knw how many interns they are looking for? Also, what are due dates? I guess ill go on the nih website, but any insight is greatly appreciated as the OP requested.

Hello fellow NIH internship applicants :)
I'm a high school senior who's been accepted to college. I submitted my application on November 20, 2007. I haven't heard a thing yet. I've been emailing too...but apparently none of the institutes I'm applying to have reviewed summer kids yet.

What I noticed: I got a lot of emails back saying that the PI's did not need summer interns. Also, got one that said they were looking for only interns who attended last year.

I think 3000 apply and like 600-700 get it...60-70 at each lab...I dunno. I've been kinda obsessing over this program.

Anyone else who's applying, PM me your AIM please so we can talk more about this :)?

I actually have a question about this. If your a high school student, and you don’t live in the area, do you have to find other housing by yourself? What usually happens in those situations?

haha i realize this thread is old, but i would appreciate a reply. thank you :)

From what I understand, you need to find your own housing. Unless you are very resourceful and wise beyond your years or have friends and family in the area, this might not be the right thing to do. It is more of a professional setting, no dorm or counselors, not a good idea if you plan on being there by yourself not knowing anyone.

ohh, ok thank you! I’m considering applying for next summer…maybe we have some family friends or something near there.
haha that makes it a lot harder for most high school students then…

All of these internships seem to require you to be 16. I am a rising junior and will be 16 in August, but will not be 16 by the start of these, so is it worthwhile to apply? Will my application even be considered?

You can’t apply if you won’t be 16 by the time of the internship. Many programs explicitly state that you HAVE to be 16 by the start. This is normally for insurance, payment, or policy reasons that are beyond their control.

The Answer:

No your application won’t be considered

Sorry

Was hoping that wouldn’t be the answer! But thanks for your help! Does anybody have any reccommendations on summer programs for rising juniors that don’t have an age requirement? I had been looking into hshsp but that was really all I could find
