Have any high school students here done a NIH internship? I would have to rent an apartment if I wanted to do this (I live too far away), and this seems like an odd way to spend the summer. It seems disorganized compared to the programs that give you housing. Do most students that do NIH internships live nearby? Do the high school kids hang out after being in the lab all day?

If anyone has ANY information about the NIH program, let me know. I have been to their website and I've seen all the links, but I'm wondering about the social aspect of being so far from home.

billybob - I am also looking to apply to the NIH summer internship. I found a link somewhere on the nih website that lists that some universities provide housing for summer interns in washinton dc. If i remember correctly among them are amercian u, george washington and georgetown.

i want to apply, too. but the question is, do they accpet high school students who don't have any research experience?? has anybody here been accepted to NIH as a junior/senior without research experience?

Is there any way to get around the US citizen/permanent resident requirement? I'm a legal resident of the United States, and have a valid work permit; I just don't have a green card yet. I'd really love to apply.

I personally know several high school students who are doing an NIH internship. As for myself, I am a part-time in NIH, by the way, I am a senior. The summer after my junior year, practically everyone I know applied to NIH student summer program. However, only those who had connections got in, I didnt have any connection, so I didn't get it. 1 out of 20 high school students who are selected for this program actually EARNS it. A lot of my friends' parents work at NIH so its pretty easy for them to get it and it pays ALOT. i mean ALOT, close to 3000 dollars for the entire summer.

Anyways, just an advice, dont put too much hope for this internship. First of all, one of my friends is REALLY bright and he volunteered at a lab in NIH at the end of his sophomore year and by the end of his junior year, he was a returning student and therefore got paid. That might be something to think about.

Anyways, good luck to those who are going to apply!

thisyearsgirl, I am sorry to say that you might not be able to get the summer internship at NIH if you dont pay green card. The reason is because in order for you to get paid by NIH, you absolutely HAVE to have a green card. This holds true for ANY governmental institution.

If would be a different story if you only want to VOLUNTEER in a lab at NIH. If not, try to apply to other university-sponsored internships.

I'm applying also. I hope I get in cause I need to do this something constructive this summer.

Anyone that did the summer internship know what type of people usually get in the program? Like, experience, grades, reccommendations, and stuff?

I may be applying to the NIH internship this summer as a junior. I was wondering whether it would be better to spend my summer doing this or working in a lab at UPenn where I am guranteed to be a co author of a paper that will be published in a well known journal.

I'm going to be interning at the NIH...but I need a girl to house with. I am a high school junior and a female. So if any female is interning please get back to me

Well there's kinda of a loop-hole to definately get in. I did it by accident. I'm part of this Science Research program at my school...and the goal is to obtain a mentor who will conduct a research project with you at his/her lab. I contacted a scientist at the NIH, who was conducting a study on aging which I am interested in. He said yes to being my mentor. And he said all I have to do is indicate on the application that he already said yes...therefore they cannot say no. My screename on aim is: fieryraven03 if you want to talk further. Maybe you can get in this way to...b.c I really need someone to dorm with. You my dad says that he'll have my grandmother live with me in Maryland if I don't find someone...and it doesn't sound to fun...so if I get a girl who's also at the NIH to house with me then no grandmother and I think it'll be a more fun experience. Well I hope to hear from you soon.

Natalya--do you already live near the NIH, and therefore it's easy for you to get to the mentor's lab? Or could anyone really do that? Thanks for the info..that sounds like a really good way to get in. I was thinking of applying but was iffy about the whole housing thing too.
