Hello Everyone,
I have just been offered a position at a Laboratory at the National Cancer Institute (NIH SIP Program). I was just wondering what it was like the 8 or 10 weeks you were there? What was the experience like; what work did you do?
Thank You
Congratulations. As long as you can survive the 8 weeks on your own (do you have family in the neighborhood), you should have a great experience. It is self driven and so you can get as much or as little experience based on how much effort you want to put in.
Hi, I actually applied too, but I had a hard time finding a PI. How’d you find a match? I emailed about 10 PI’s in December, and only 2 replied. At this point, I’m optimistic on the HiSTEP program at NIH. It’s too late to find a PI now right? @texaspg
Opinion:
Which is more prestigious NIH SIP or SIMR?
@ultimate314 I’ve heard that while NIH SIP draws from a pool of competitive undergrad and high school applicants, connections are really important since the PI is the one that selects the interns. So idk how many get in by merit or by connections
I was accepted to both but don’t know which one to pick
@ultimate314 Where do you live? And what field of research will you be doing for each program? You really can’t go wrong with either program tbh
I will most likely be doing cancer bio for both
@ultimate314 NIH and SIMR are on opposite ends of the country so idk how transportation costs would factor in for you. Additionally, I know that although both programs don’t provide housing, NIH provides the most stipend money. NIH I think provides more freedom and time with your mentor/to research; there isn’t a lecture series like at SIMR. Regarding prestige, most people have differing views but there is no doubt those 2 programs are at the top. It’s cliche but a summer program is really what you put into it!
Thanks for your help @OneMata. Also do you guys know if there is a facebook group?
