@Tobster18 I might. Are you a sophomore in high school? That’s honestly quite impressive.
No, I’m a junior. Being in high school hasn’t really helped me with geting positions, most of them want college students.
Yeah with programs like NIH it’s definitely very difficult if you don’t have connections because you are competing with college students who are more experienced/have reference from popular professors. I literally finished my app yesterday and started emailing today and got an interview 30 mins after I emailed.
Lucky, I’ve been emailing since December and still no interviews, just a bunch of we will keep you in consideration.
Well I’m a freshman undergrad and it’s already really impressive that you are this involved as a junior in hs. Definitely don’t give up!
Agreed @Tobster18.
I’ve been emailing for months now (as a HS sophomore) and I’ve gotten one interview (which is scheduled for next week at the NIH campus). It does seem to me that in addition to having a good resume (relative to other high schoolers applying), you also have to get somewhat lucky in that you have to email someone who is willing to take the risk of taking on a high schooler for a summer.
About 60% of the interns are undergraduates and 30% are high schoolers, so I would say it is a crapshoot, especially considering it is pretty late now. I have a HS friend whose parents work at NIH and they said that most offers to hs students were made before Christmas. But there certainly still are offers going around right now so just work very hard.
Guys very trivial question but which one sounds better for a title of my research paper: The effect of blah blah on blah blah vs determining the effect of blah blah on blah blah
I meant title for my science fair poster board
Imho “The effect of …” sounds better, but I think it depends on the project as well – is it more about the said effects or the ways to determine the effects?
more of the said effects
I would title it "the effect of… " if it was me
That’s what I thought, thanks
One of the PI’s really loved my email and my interest but said she wasn’t offered any internship positions this year. So, she forwarded my email and my information to a summer student coordinator so that she can forward them to labs that have a summer internship opening. Should i be hopeful about this?
And also, when do most of the PI’s start beginning to decide acceptances. I heard they usually tell you if you’re accept around March but IDK what to believe.
I wouldn’t be too hopeful, but it is definitely a good thing. I got quite a few people do the same thing, yet not much has happened.
K Thanks @Tobster18 guess I’m back to drafting emails!
Just got accepted to a lab at NIDDK! Looking for someone to room with in the Bethesda area, please PM me (I’m a female college freshman). Good luck to everyone!
Guys, I just realized i made a huge mistake. I emailed the scientist my rough draft of my research paper instead of my final draft, so there are a bunch of grammatical errors. So what do I do??? Let it be or re email with the final draft?
I say re-email saying that this is the final draft of the work!
