I believe NMSC either emails or mails the list of Finalists to the schools, with a Target Date of Feb 2. I’ve read differing accounts of whether or not the school is copied on a “rejection letter.”
Really, for those waiting who do not have any issues w/semester Cs or possible discipline problems, I would rest easy. Our household is like The Perfect Storm: One semester C, and mail delivery that’s known for being consistently unreliable over a span of 15 years. So that’s why I’m still here, waiting, posting, and praying that a letter never comes. Our immediate neighbors have been incredibly kind to walk down to the mailbox area & check the mail every day, bless them. The other households that get our mail are not in close proximity to our house, so it’s hard to say if they would forward a letter, or when it would come.
Every day with no letter, I am so happy and grateful! But it’s always in the back of my mind that the letter was sent and we simply did not get it.
I did call the high school this AM, on the off-chance they had info either way, and was told that nothing could be announced before early Feb. Nobody would confirm or deny that any information was there, but everyone I spoke with was very nice. They are good people and rooting for DS almost as much as I am, which I appreciate…
The female intern (not Jimmie) at NM headquarters told me they would be mailed on the 2nd. For what that’s worth. Something will also be mailed to us on the 9th, but hopefully most of us will have heard before those are carrier pigeoned to our homes (or in @GoAskDad’s case, her neighbor’s home).
@3scoutsmom I live in Texas and I can tell you why there are so many NM winners in Texas - I don’t believe it’s because the kids are smarter or smart people are moving here - it just makes economic sense. Many Texas colleges (excluding UT-Austin) give good $$ for NMF - Texas A&M, UT-Denton, UT-Dallas, University of Houston, etc. plus Oklahoma and its generous universities are only a few hours away if you live in Dallas/Ft. Worth. It can pay big $$ to be a NMF in Texas. We really wanted our daughter to attend a school in California, but aside from USC, no big name schools gave $ for NMF.
@3scoutsmom and @milwaukeegirl, the number in each state, Texas included, is based on the number of graduating seniors. Each state gets its proportional share of the nation’s 16,000 semifinalists based on the number of graduating seniors in that state.
Yes! @Barfly that’s what I meant: increased population = increased number of graduating seniors = increased number of NMF
@milwaukeegirl how ‘smart’ (based on the PSAT) the population is determines how high or low the cut off score is for each state. The smarter the kids taking the PSAT the higher the cut off for that state. I agree that people may care more about NMF in TX because of $$ offered at schools in the area but it won’t effect the number of NMF from TX.
Texas also has a very high percentage of students taking the PSAT compared to other states, so that raises the cutoff score as well. But primarily, all Texas kids are just smarter than average.
@3scoutsmom - My bad…I read the thread quickly and thought we were talking about the Texas SCORES rising, not the raw number of NMF from Texas rising.
On a positive note, of the 10 NMSFs I know through DD’s school and church, as of yesterday no one had gotten “the letter.” Mail has already run today and no rejection letters at our house.
@milwaukeegirl, we haven’t heard of any Texas letters either. There are only 4 NMSFs at our HS, and I don’t know if any of them might have a grade issue.
