I suspect they like to keep their options open in case they figure out that they missed something.
What, like a stray C or two that NMSC folks will cackle about and pounce on like starving hyenas to a fresh carcass?
@albert69 one of us is reading the chart wrong. It looks to me that Texas follows CA with 1,348
Oh, sorry, @3scoutsmom. You’re right. At any rate, those are old numbers.
Right @albert69. I think the numbers will actually increase for Texas this year and likely decrease for CA because of the population shift.
@3scoutsmom A bunch of people moved from CA to TX?
When FL residents start to understand that FIS guarantees instate COA for NMF, I predict that PSAT tutoring will become routine and NMSF will skyrocket here. We are so lucky to be in this first crop of families that are eligible. Praying for 4 years of funding here.
The weird thing for me is that my backup university, that offers NMSF and NMF scholarships, didn’t offer the National Merit scholarships for the last 4 years for incoming freshmen because of funding issues, and they were just recently reinstated. Hopefully the funding would hold out if I decided to go on one of those…
@Albert69, Yes about half my subdivision is from CA. The cost of living is much lower here in Texas and the booming tech sectors are drawing many away from CA. My neighbors complain that the taxes in CA where getting insane. TX has no state income tax and has a strong and growing economy.
@Cshecmia I was under the impression the FIS only applied to National Merit Scholars, based on the wording. As a Florida resident, I’ve been reading the wording carefully on multiple pages. It would make sense that they’d only fund the NMS in an effort to spend significantly less. Although one page claims it can apply to all finalists, the actual wording in the Florida Statute specifies it’s only awarded to “any Florida high school graduate who receives recognition as a National Merit Scholar or National Achievement Scholar and who initially enrolls in the 2014-2015 academic year or, later, in a baccalaureate degree program at an eligible Florida public or independent postsecondary educational institution”.
As a 2016 graduate and soon-to-be-named-semifinalist-and-then-likely-later-rejected-for-three-semester-Cs hopeful, I of course have a great interest in this. Hopefully they’ll change the wording for it to apply to all NMFs, as NMSC’s process of determining which NMFs become NMSs is hazy at best.
The wording has been changed to Finalist.
@EverybodyHz What are your year grades on the semester Cs? If you can get them up to Bs by the end of the year and get your GC to list only year grades on the app when the time comes, then you might have a good chance, assuming you get a qualifying SAT score and yadayadayada.
@albert69 Those were back in 10th grade, so they can’t really be changed. 2 semester Cs in Chemistry, so that would still be a year grade of C. One was a semester C in American Lit Honors (but it was a 78 or 79, meaning the year grade would probably be a low B ). In any case, I’ll hope to appeal it with a legitimate sob story. That was a fairly tough year for me, and I’d hope NMSC would have some sympathy because I come from a very poor family. Still pretty poor, actually. The idea of a free ride being out there for the taking? That’s something I can’t pass up. I meet all the other qualifications, although I haven’t yet taken the SAT, but I’m confident I could get above a 1960.
Well, try your best during the rest of your junior year and I hope you make it. And congrats on your PSAT score! A few places might even give NMSF scholarships (one of my state universities is one of them.)

@EverybodyHz, check this link if you don’t know about it yet, some schools offer full tuition + for NMSF. With a federal loan, Pell and work study and maybe summer earnings that should work out.
Could someone who received a rejection kindly check your NM portal and see if there is any indication of the rejection…such as inability to select a first choice school, etc.
Someone was nice enough to check. Portal is unchanged.
Do we think that we are safe yet ?
I think I read some where that principals receive the Finalist list on February 2. Why do they receive it before the kids? Just curious with the reasoning there?
Do the principles receive the list on February 2nd or are they mailed February 2nd? I understood they were mailed on that date.
