No letter. When are we gonna call ourselves safe? I’m guessing when we actually have the Finalist confirmation in hand…
For those of us that are cynics- when the tuition invoice arrives marked $0.00 balance due.
There you go. i like that better. It’s safer.
I will feel safe only once my dad (my “principal”) gets the letter.
I no longer feel compelled to grab the mail the second it arrivesl, but it will be nice next week to hear that official confirmation. @albert69, do share when yours arrives, for those of us waiting for less emotionally attached principals, LOL! What was the math class you dropped?
@PAMom21 I will post when I (I mean, my principal) get the letter. The math class was Calc III. I guess it’s not the end of the world if I have to start my freshman year with that rather than Differential Equations.
My son took multivariable calculus last year, which is probably the same as calc 3 (?), and is taking linear algebra this year. I suspect he’ll probably retake both as official college classes. The classes he took in high school were both online classes.
@Rdtsmith, my son has not notified NMSC of his choice yet, and his brothers waited until the last minute as well. Over the years, there has been much CC debate as to whether selecting the school early is wise. For my older boys, waiting turned out to be more lucrative - as their number one college of choice offered them more money because they were “undecided”.
Does anyone know when we find out about the actual monetary award of $2500? Because I’m pretty sure only 2,500 of the finalists or something like that get that amount if money.
Yes, Luke at UCF is so professional and helpful! The Doubletree Hotel was also a nice little perk for our visit. UCF does it right!
@saismom, what will happen at UCF now that Florida has this National Merit money for all the in-state finalists? Will UCF lose their in-state NMFs? Or are people worried enough about legislature funding the initiative that they will continue to choose UCF?
Haven’t visited UCF yet, but agree that all communications from Luke are so professional and informative as you say. He is well worth whatever they are paying him for sure.
Doubletree…free cookies! What’s not to like? LOL! Wish I’d checked in here before going, I could have made some new IRL friends.
Letter-Free again today. I can’t exhale yet, however. I guess we just wait until the school notifies the student, correct? @albert69, you and your Homeschool Principal are our New Best Friends!
My D put “Undecided” down also–because she really is undecided.
I have WSU listed as my first choice. I’ve emailed them so much they know I want to go there. No letter here!
No letter for us today! That trip to the mailbox isn’t quite as scary now. S did get a letter saying he is a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program - that was a nice surprise!
Congrats! That is huge @LMHS73
@celesteroberts Glad you asked! Here is how it will work: The student will still receive their free laptop but the Florida Incentive Scholarship will kick in the balance after Bright Futures and whatever the student receives from there NM award be it corporate or the one time $2500. Scenario: A kid is named a corporate scholar. The total Cost of Attendance (COA) which includes all the estimates for books, personal expenses etc. as well as the fixed costs of tuition and dorm are all figured into that. That COA - (Bright Futures+ National Merit award) is what the state will pay. ( Florida Incentive Scholarship). UCF kicks in the laptop and a few other goodies. Luke also assured us that UCF has committed to resuming their original big NM package if the Florida Legislature changes their mind and chooses to not fund the Florida Incentive Scholarship in subsequent years. In other words, UCF pledges to keep you in school at their cost even if the state does not. This is making it very hard for us to decide because we also have pre-paid which means my kiddo will actually pocket a nice little sum toward other educational expenses.
@saismom can I pm you a specific question about prepaid?
I just wanted to say I’m still lurking here (and in the other threads on this as well, can’t keep them all straight!) and so happy to see that so many of you have NOT received the letter. Hopefully the official “you are in” letters come soon and all of you can truly breathe a sigh of relief. Fingers continue to be crossed!
