NMH Paperwork

I was wondering if anyone who is attending NMH in the fall has received any paperwork yet for math/language placement? Thanks!

We did -- the package included forms for parent and student to fill out, several teacher recommendations and a math placement test. We also recieved health forms to fill out a few weeks ago.

Do you get the same?

We got the health forms, but nothing else. Did they come around the same time? My son has finals in 2 weeks. I'm not sure his teachers will be very cooperative filling out forms... What subject were the recs for... I assume math and foreign language.

we got the course selection paperwork last friday -- priority envelope addressed to the student.

teacher recs were language and science (which I thought was strange since freshman don't really have a choice for science).

I called -- no math rec, they will use the rec sent in with the application and the placement test (which was included in the package).

I think I would call them about the paperwork -- our paperwork asked us to return the materials within 2 weeks (which will be this coming Friday)

It turns out tht we did get it!!! It didn't come in a NMH envelope so we didn't open it right away. Thanks for your help.

I got an extension because i was out of the country. Is anyone else going to try to place out of Algebra 1?

My son will be taking Geometry next year in 9th grade -- but he isn't trying to "place out of it", he took Algebra I this year in school. It was a tough class, IB level and he did well -- he thought the NMH math test was easy and completed most of the Algebra II part and some of the pre-calc part.

My son is also going to take Geometry. He took algebra II this year. He'll have to decide after Geometry whether to retake algebra II.

I'm a little confused about the cocuuriculars. If he has a sport each marking term, does he still sign up for the cocurriculars? Can they be added at a later date?

Stef - What 1/2 credit course is your son taking next year?

We were also confused -- so I called and asked some questions. If they do a sport, they don't have to do any co-curriculars, but if they want to then they can. They can be added or changed later -- but they want an idea of what the kids want.

One of the things that we were confused about was that some of the co-curriculars are by application or selection (Model United Nations, Debate, Theater role, etc) so we didn't know if he was supposed to sign up or wait -- they told us to have him put down what he wanted to do and they would adjust later.

for his 1/2 credit course, he wants Acting and then he listed Comparative Politics in Modern Context as his alternate. Which course did your son select?

My school doesn't have designated courses, but I've done all of Algebra I and some of Geometry, so that's why technically I'm "placing" out of it.

For my half credit I'm doing Creative Writing and then Comparative Politics as my first alternative.

My son is taking computers for his first choice. I think Comparative Politics will be his second choice. He actually is hoping that he can find a way to take Latin II. I called but haven't heard back from the school yet. I have to get my son's birth cert so we haven't sent in the paperwork yet. The school has a lot of really cool offerings.

my son did acting for his 1/2 credit and loved it....the instructor is excellent and was also Uma Thurman's acting teacher at NMH.
My son had taken Honors Alg. I, Geometry and Honors Alg. II before going to NMH. He had a difficult time in Honors Alg. II and we requested that he re-do it there. He did well and will do Honors Pre-Calc as a sophomore.
My son also did a sport every term; I just had him him put down "probables" for EC's (i.e. maybe guitar lessons). He only ended up doing doing one EC this year....I wanted him to focus on academics/athletics; my older son tried to pile on way too much his freshman year. It think anyone can do Model UN; the selection only involves the group chosen to travel.

keylyme - is your son involved in any community service through the school? I know the colleges that my ds is interested in want the whole package. Not sure how he would have time at home.

(Were you at the Cape for the soccer tournament this past weekend?)

My son did not do any particular community service through school, other than his work job (but I suppose that does count as 4 hours of community service per week) and the school-wide service day (which, as fate would have it, was also kitchen-duty for him). He also, as you know, acted as a tour guide. He has been nominated to be a Peer Mediator for next year, which will count towards both community service and leadership. He also helped worked with some youth soccer groups that came on campus (the coach facilitated this). So, there are opportunities on campus, including actual community service groups.
No, we were at the Potomac tournament in Maryland.

While not active in Soccer, I was on Cape Cod this weekend (My partner's family has a small cottage there). I saw the signs for the soccer tournament at the high school, and thought: hmm, is this a big one? Are any CCer's here? Hope those of you who were there did well at the tournament, and had some time to enjoy the lovely scenery of Cape Cod over the holiday weekend!

It was a pretty good sized tournament - perfect weather, but I didn't get to go the beach. My son's team won their U-14 premier division so they were very happy.

Keylyme - I have a NMH sports question. My son just told me that he wants to do swimming at NMH for his winter sport???? Do they make cuts to their sports teams because swimming doesn't have a thirds team.

We had beautiful weather in Maryland as well....very nice hotel in Gaithersburg at Washingtonian Center. The team did lousy though....ugh, we lost all of our good players to the academy program (14 of them)! It is hard for my son; he could have done academy had he not chosen to go to boarding school, but he certainly doesn't want to give up boarding school. He will be practicing with them over the summer, at least.

Yes, they do make cuts...but not for all teams. Sports like soccer and baseball definitely have cuts. I am not sure about swimming; you might want to e-mail the coach and ask.

Swimming doesn't cut.

warriorboy, i signed up for swimming for my winter sport too! looks like your son and i will be on the same team.

I noticed that the JV swimming is coed... Do they still compete against other teams?

hellosunshine - are you an experienced swimmer? I'm wondering if my son should get some lessons to spruce up his swimming.
