Turn down NMH few weeks ago !

Ah. Two questions: Did you revisit? and Where are you going instead?

march10success2 i felt the same as you did!!
i did not revisit since i'm not in the states.
i'm going to peddie instead.

I heard Peddie produces all its own chemistry materials at its own on-campus refinery.

really? amazing!
lataxi what do you think of pedddddddie?

Yes, I did revisit NMH.
I will go to another BS also in NE.

rocncyber - I have friends in Peddie and we visited the campus last fall. Their science program is excellent !

rocncyber.....you don't know laxtaxi very well, do you?

Peddie is close to Princeton, there are plenty to do/see at that area.

I thought I would bring this back up for a couple people who have pm'ed me about NMH.

Has anyone gotten the packet with more information in it?

Go to
Compare Boarding Schools - Boarding School Review

type school nmaes an compare.

Peddie is a pretty good school.

Peddie acceptance rate is only 23% while NMH acceptance rate is over 50%.

I am sorry to say that NMH is a long way to go to be a top school. its SSAT
average score is below far below 80%.

"I am sorry to say that NMH is a long way to go to be a top school. its SSAT
average score is below far below 80%."

And that is the sole thing you judge a school on? (I don't believe NMH has an average SSAT score published on BSR). NMH is an excellent school....it is very much a "top" school. Also, those BSR numbers on acceptance are dated, and are indicative of the year immediately following NMH's consolidation. I believe NMH had a much lower acceptance rate this year and it is expected to continue dropping. They are a school on the move.

And the good news is that NMH is still accepting applications for this Fall. I just received an email to that effect (we must have gotten on the mailing list 2-3 yrs ago). It says "Although some applicants have had some problems sitting for the admission standardized tests, these exams helps us to determine the qualifications of each student. Please note that we accept the TOFEL, SSAT, SAT, PSAT, and the ISEE." Good for those who missed an SSAT deadline but have results from another test.

peddie kicks nmh's ass

We visited both Peddie and NMH, there are two very different schools.
It really depends on what you want from the school.

For us, college is very important. We did not have any experience or info about BS, BSR was like a stepping stone for our search. We compared numbers. We did not know if the numbers were update or not (who knows? Unless you are insider). After we visit the campus, realized there are something beside college matriculation!

so you visited peddie & nmh, arling?
what do you think of those two?

My older son visited: Andover, Exeter, SPS, Deerfield, Groton, Avon, Middlesex, Choate, Hotchkiss, NMH....and probably others! (He toured all of the schools a year early with a friend who was moving and planning on attending). His hands-down favorite was NMH, to the point where he didn't even want to appy anywhere else. His friend applied to NMH and Andover and was accepted at both. He also really wanted to go to NMH, but chose Andover because of their Japanese program. We were quite familiar with manyof the schools, particularly SPS and Exeter because we live near them and know many who have attended. We did have my son visit these two schools again with us. I at first was swayed by the numbers/name prestige, which is why I had him apply to SPS and Exeter. After visiting with him, though, NMH was my and my husband's favorite as well. In fact, we were disappointed in our visits with the other two schools, particular Exeter, which was quite cold and unwelcoming feeling. NMH had everything the other schools had....and something more, such an air of caring. The people there are so genuinely kind....and real. The only reason NMH has higher admission numbers is because they lack the name prestige. Believe me, they lack in no other area. Any child who would gain admittance to an Ivy at any of the "big name" schools, would do the same at NMH. They just have had lower numbers of applicants. They are not a lesser institution. People have not done their research as well as they think if they are depriving themselves of the opportunity to attend this wonderful school based merely on the popularity of some of the other institutions. (Which is what you are doing when you use the stats only).
When it came time for my younger son to apply to schools, he did not even want to consider any other place. Can't blame him.

I wanted to add to my post and say that I certainly do agree that there are many other fine schools, and the more "famous" schools certainly have their attributes as well. You just can't judge a school completely by the numbers. You have to look beyond that. Certainly, there are schools with lower numbers that really aren't good schools. But....the numbers do not tell the entire story, either.

In another thread it was stated that NMH only admitted 70 grade nine students. Is that accurate? It seems like a low number. All the positive comments about the school has me interested.

They had 75 boarding spots. Then they typically admit about 25 day students. The majority of day students are admitted as freshmen. We were told about 400 freshman applicants this year.
