Northfield Mt Hermon

I am considering sending my daughter to Northfield in 10th grade next year. She applied to Exeter and Deerfield and got wait listed. Her math SSAT score was low. I would like to hear form parents who have kids at Northfield about the academics and if their child is happy there. Also comment how it compares to the "top ten" boarding schools. I would also welcome comments from Northfield students and grads.

I would suggest posting this on the parent’s thread or on the main thread.

I will be most likely attending NMH next year because I was wait listed at hotchkiss, taft and loomis. From the beggining NMH was in my Top 3 choices, before I visited I had called it a “safety school,” but once I met the kids and explored the campus I realized how much I could see myself thrive there. So how does it compare to other schools? Well, I would say it can argurably be a tier 1 or 2 school, now of course, as you may know, they use the block system. So theres 4 blocks a day, 3 classes, and a free block. I sat in on AP calculus and English, and compared to my school the classes were very hands on and interactive. I also had been in classes in Loomis so, I can say I enjoyed NMH classes better because it seemed as if the kids were more into it and involved. So as a whole I believe NMH is a great school that is well rounded, it has an amazing arts center known as RAC, great sports teams, amazing campus, nice and diverse students. So overall, I would say send your daughter to NMH because she will thrive there, one way or another.

Funny, my son had opposite impression, saw kids clearly goofing off in classes at NMH and felt like LC was much more academically engaging. Just another opinion: we were all very high on NMH and still think it’s a great school, but son preferred LC. I would say the biggest factor for consideration is how your kid will do with NMH’s block system and the high degree of academic freedom (fewer required courses in the curriculum than at many peer schools, much greater opportunity to customize your own BS experience).
