NMS cutoff predictions for class of 2018

@3scoutsmom, FANTASTIC score! Congrats! TX bumping to a 222 seems unlikely, and I would take some comfort from the Compass Prep estimated range for 2017, which was 218-220. There will of course be two years of all new scores for consideration, but those folks crunched numbers pretty hard. I’d say you have a fairly fun 10 months of terrible worry ahead.

219 in MD
Do I have a chance?

@kelpo123 last year the MD cut was 221 along with CA and Virginia, could be worse the highest cut offs were DC, NJ and MA at 222.

I called the CB and they said that they will start posting PSAT scores at 6 am on Monday.

@3scoutsmom OMG! You are almost exactly in the same boat we were in with my older son. He was two points higher than the previous year and one point higher than TX had ever been. It was a very long wait and a bitter pill to swallow when he did not make it.

Since your son already has a very high SAT score, all he can really do is finish junior year strong and look for schools he likes that offer big merit for high scorers that are non-NMSF. Knowing you on these forums over the last few years, that’s done.

I think four things could happen- 1) They got everything exactly right last year and the cut off doesn’t move, 2)They got everything right last year but Texas test taking population increased and to keep Texas within quota, the cut off bumps up, 3) Last year’s PSAT scores were too high and the curve is harsher this year and the cutoff goes down or 4) same as three but it is offset by population growth and stays the same.

State summaries might help with guessing, but not sure if one will ever come out again. In the meantime, just a lot of waiting. ETA: Commended score will also give us an idea.

I’ll be rooting for him!

Waiting for Monday to see if my S is still in this race.

Thanks @gettingschooled you’re right, his SAT scores and grades and EC’s should put him in a good position for merit even if he doesn’t make National Merit, it just would be a bit easier if he did make it. He’s pretty much decided that he’s only applying to two schools, UT Dallas and UT Austin, he’ll be an auto admit at both schools. UT Dallas is his first choice (much to the disbelief of his classmates!). He stands an excellent chance for the Honors AES award and might even have a shot at the McDermott if he doesn’t make NM. Their CS program is wonderful and will allow him a lot of flexibility. The location is perfect, about 3ish hours north of us and 3ish hours south of his sister at OU. If he ends up at UT Austin (which would only happen if they gave lots of merit and UTD did not) he would need to commute and it would likely still be more expensive.

I’m in LA, and got word from the GC that I got a 220 index. Should this probably be sufficient considering last year’s cutoff is a 214?

I sure would think so, @cwil2018. Congratulations!

Thank you!

hey I am from texas and got a 221 this year. While it is slightly higher than last years cutoff, I have talked to my friends and they have all been able to pull off scores in the 220’s. While i do go to a relatively strong highschool, I am slightly worried about a large jump in texas cutoff. what are the odds i can still make it this year?

What do you consider an outlier district? I just looked at the county by county results for our state, and our county and the 7 other closest counties had a grand total of 4 NMS last year. 8 counties! There is a single high school in our state that had 129. That should indicate that there is something extremely wrong with the playing field.

I’m not vested in debating the topic; it’s just an observation.

@planner03, I am in West Texas. I am sure the entire west side of the state has single digit NMF compared with the high producing schools in the Dallas/Ft Worth, Austin, Houston metro areas.
I feel ya.

@planner03 how many NMFs does your school usually have? Out central Texas school averages about 20+ for a class of a little less than 600 most years. Are your friends the typically high scoring crowd, how many friends do you have that scored 220+?

What are the very low chances that 219 qualifies for NJ?

@scoutmom This year we have 1, last year 1(1 of the 4 in the 8 county area, woo hoo!), the year before we had zero. I don’t think we have ever had more than 1, and we usually don’t have any, so we are actually on a hot steak right now with 2 years in a row, lol. FYI our graduating classes are in the 350-375 range normally.

I am actually the Mom. 220, lol…150 is a good score here! And as I pointed out, we are not an “outlier” school, this is typical for our entire region.

@1810048 NJ is one of the toughest states to qualify. The odds of a 219 qualifying are very low. It is a great score and I bet your SAT is great too! You’ll have a lot of great choices.

@planner03 so sorry I meant to direct that post to @strugglelyfe who was saying that bunch of their friends where scoring in the 220’s. Sorry for the confusion!

So @stugglely how many NMFs does your school usually have? Are your friends the typically high scoring crowd, how many friends do you have that scored 220+ What’s your class size?

When will we know who is a SF F commended etc.? I read something about you recieve a letter in september> So this september (that has passed) or next september?

This coming September, really it take less time to conceive and deliver a baby than it takes it find out if your kid is NMSF!

@3scoutsmom Ahahaha too true thanks!
