I was lucky enough to be awarded of the $2500 National Merit scholarships, however the school I will be attending has awarded me of their full ride scholarships. Am I still allowed to receive the scholarship or will it be factored into the school's cost of attendance? My impression was that the $2500 would be given to me regardless of what I would get from the school, but I'm not sure, and NMS's website isn't clear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will still receive the NMSC scholarship, but it’s up to the school whether they will reduce your award. I have heard of cases both ways. My D was in the same situation last year and was allowed to keep the $2500 on top of her full ride scholarship.

Thanks for the reply. I’m wondering, did you and your daughter contact the financial aid office to keep the NM scholarship?

The NMSC scholarship you will get to keep. As BobWallace says it’s up to the school regarding your other award. Usually, if it’s financial aid, it is likely to be reduced (though no t always; there are schools that permit stacking) but if it’s merit, it’s nearly always kept. Merit awards given regardless of need, are kept regardless of other award as a rule.

Yes, she contacted the school and they told her she would receive the NMSC $2500 on top of her scholarship. She is saving it to spend on something special like study abroad.
