My daughter is planning on attending a church run university - BYU. She has written her essay for their application and plans to use it for the NMSF Essay as well.

In it she writes about a challenge she faces and quotes two scriptures from the Book of Mormon that helped her a great deal.

With all of the anti-christian and especially anti-mormon sentiment out there I wondered if she should cut that part out.

Does anyone have experience where they felt mentioning faith/scriptures in their essay might have prevented them from moving on?

It won’t hurt her at all.

However, if you’re that worried, leave it out.

That said, I’m sure that the NMCorp people know that many of the NMSF/NMFs from Utah a are LDS so I doubt they are anti-Mormon.

We are from Florida - but hopefully heading to BYU.

Aren’t the NMCorp people from the east coast?
I was worried about their bias. Especially with all of the misinformation the popular “mormon” play stired up. For most people I would agree it would not be an issue, but from those who have biases - we have experienced some unbelievable things. It’s crazy that it’s that way - but it is.

Anyway, D and I have decided to let her essay stand as is. She does not want to change it to please others. I am proud of her decision. It’s an excellent essay on a huge trial she has faced and it made me cry when I read it. So they will definitely know her.

If she does not move on, I will be very suspicious and will post back.

Since BYU does not offer NMSF specific scholarships our risk may not be as great as someone attending another school.

So this would be more important for others and I’ll be sure to share the outcome.

Thanks

Glad to see a fellow Mormon on here! Don’t be too worried, the essay is not especially critical for the scholarship. I know why you’d be worried, but the NMS isn’t run by bigots. Also, it’s based in Evanston, Illinois, so not quite East Coast.

People…

NMCorp is not looking for bigoted reasons to keep kids from making NMF. The reasons a student won’t make NMF (from NMCorps position) are quite clear…The reasons are not subjective. They don’t care if you’re an atheist, a Hare Krishna member, a Communist, a Tea Party member, you dye your hair purple, you wear a burka, or you have full body tattoos and multiple piercings.

If you have the SAT score and send it, you have the GPA, you aren’t a discipline problem, and you don’t write a rude essay, you’ll make it.

Seriously, do you think that NMCorp doesn’t know that BYU has NMFs attending…who are likely LDS?

Now a few (very few) have said that their HIGH schools have some misguided notions and think that they can only “recommend” one or a limited number of their NMSFs. However, that’s just from misunderstanding the rules of the program. Frankly, those few schools need to be properly informed, but that’s another subject. :)
