DD's guidance counselor just called and said she was working on the school's portion of the application and she thinks her essay is too short. GC wants her to go back in and revise it to make it longer. Has anyone ever heard of an essay being too short on the application? Her essay filled up about 1/3 to 1/2 of the window in the preview.

An essay can’t solely be judged by length. If she thinks that the essay says everything that needs to be said, then she has a nice, succinct piece. But for the NM app specifically, my counselor said that the essay isn’t really looked at closely, and the only way that the essay could really hurt a person is if it’s rude or nonexistent.

The essay is fine as long as it’s not completely off topic or insulting… that said, I still think a good, short essay would be fine. I said everything I wanted to say in a little over 400 words. Have you read it yourself?

That’s the same opinion her Dad(NMF twenty-five years ago) and I have. Yes, we both read it and thought it was fine. Now that her application is closed online I’m not sure what she can do about it anyway. Her school hasn’t had any NMSF the past two years and the GCs rotate so I’m not sure if her GC has any experience with NM.

As long as the essay’s fine, her grades and SAT score are good, and she hasn’t had disciplinary problems at school, she will be a finalist. The counselors might not have experience with NM, but all that matters is that your daughter completes her part of the application. NM says they’ll continue to contact the counselors if their part is not done.
