Senior captain Troy McGuinness won by a decision over his opponent from Johns Hopkins and pinned his opponent from Gettysburg in 40 seconds.
The No. 17 United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team beat Johns Hopkins, 38-3 and Gettysburg, 39-7 on Saturday afternoon to finish conference play a perfect 7-0. In the 133-pound weight class, sophomore Philip Greene recorded two pins in the dual matches. Both pins were recorded in less than two minutes.

"I thought our guys wrestled well," said Head Coach Tim Alger. "We have been feeling a little under the weather for a couple of weeks now, but they came back ready to wrestle today and they wrestled tough. Our guys dug some big matches out and came back to win when they could've laid down. That was big for us."

"I thought everyone performed very well today," added senior captain Troy McGuinness. "We came in and did what we should have done. As a senior, it definitely feels great to go 7-0 in the conference dual matches. At the same time, it is not going to mean a thing if we don't win the qualifier at the conference tournament. It feels good, but we need to stay focused for what's to come in two weeks."

At 125 pounds, freshman Jordan Alfaro won both of his matches, one by forfeit against Gettysburg and the other by a pin in 1:39 against Akshay Paintal of Johns Hopkins.

Greene pinned Xavier Mohammad of Johns Hopkins in 1:39 and Jack Bostrom of Gettysburg in 1:53. He finished the winter a perfect 7-0 against league competition.

"Phil Greene has been hot and cold all year," said Alger. "He hasn't been there all the time, but he has been solid in the conference. I think he will be on fire in two weeks ready to go (at Centennials). I really do."

Freshman James Beshada beat Ben Kauffman of Johns Hopkins by a 9-5 decision and then pinned Richard Masella of Gettysburg in 2:34. Beshada also finished the winter a perfect 7-0 against Centennial Conference opponents.

Freshman Daniel Twito won both of his matches by decisions at 149 pounds. He beat Jim Crumlish of Johns Hopkins, 5-3, and Matt Shank of Gettysburg, 9-7. Twito finished with a 6-1 mark against Centennial Conference opponents.

Freshman Scott Lowe beat Eric Levenseller of Johns Hopkins by a major decision, 18-4, and won by forfeit over Gettysburg. Lowe finished with a record of 4-2 against league opponents.

Freshman Justin Diesel won both of his matches by decisions. He beat Chris Floyd of Johns Hopkins, 8-6, and D.J. Neri of Gettysburg, 6-0. He improved his record to 4-3 against Centennial opponents.

Senior Captain Troy McGuinness beat Eric Fischel of Johns Hopkins by a decision, 6-4, and pinned Drew Wolenter of Gettysburg in 40 seconds. He finished 4-1 against Centennial competition.

No. 9 nationally-ranked Eric Vincent pinned Tyler Schmidt of Johns Hopkins in 3:00 and won by decision over Ben Cutrell of Gettysburg, 10-3. He became the third Mariner to sweep Centennial opponents and finish 7-0.

Freshman Judd Connell won by a major decision over Matt Rugani of Johns Hopkins, 12-2, and was beaten by Robert Christopher of Gettysburg by a 6-3 decision.

The Mariners return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they will play host to Hunter. The match start time is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the James Liebertz Gymnasium.
