I would also take a look at West Conn - They are often flexible about auditions and may also accept video submissions. They have a very up-and-coming program there and very reasonably priced (a HUGE bargain if from CT, and they offer regional pricing for NE residents, I believe)
Another reason to look at Columbia College Chicago is they are pretty generous with accepting credits from CC courses and AP (they take 3 scores). Since your D did a year at CC, this would knock back some gen ed’s and save you money. We toured CCC and were really impressed with it. Ultimately D has chosen a different school to attend this fall, but it was a strong contender. Their admissions are rolling, and the word is it’s not hard to get in, but once you’re there it’s rigorous and “what you make of it”.
I second WestConn. If they are still accepting applications for the MT program, apply! An up and coming program that, I believe, just switched from a BA MT to a BFA MT. They have a beautiful new multi-million dollar facility.
I believe WestConn (WCSU) also offers instate tuition for students from NY & NJ.
I have heard that their new facility is phenomenal.
I looked on the West Conn. website to see about this and it still only says BA MT. Does anyone know for sure if they now offer a MT BFA?
I see they are offering in-state tuition to all NY and NJ students which is a great benefit for us!
@el-cee - see this page for info on the BFA MT program at Western Connecticut:
http://www.wcsu.edu/theatrearts/musical-theatre/
It’s a new program, so some parts of their website probably haven’t been updated yet.
Thanks @EmsDad I appreciate it!
The WestConn program is definitely a BFA, as of this year I believe. We live near there and know several students currently in the program and a few who have recently graduated. I believe their last audition date has passed, but they may accept a video audition or arrange another date if you inquire with the department. It is definitely worth a look.
This thread is an example of how awesome the CC community is. There are always options if you have friends…!
I so wanted my D to audition at western conn last year! I had a good feeling about it. She said it was too far away.
@bisouu - Your D was a winner and destined to make it from the Day One! @NewEngMTMom - bisouu is right; don’t give up, you have options! Bisouu’s D and my D were both in your D’s situation 4 years ago, and took different paths. Her D went to her safety and was (is) a smashing success. My D heard about a late-auditioning brand-new program (Molloy/CAP21 at the time), put her all into one last audition, and got in. The rest is history for both of them. My D just capped off (oops, pardon the pun!) her college career last night, singing “Not a Day Goes By” as her old mom here sobbed silently! Not what either girl planned or expected, but Fate stepped in and led them where they were meant to be. It will happen for your D; never give up, never surrender!
@speezagmom not all schools do offer it, or actually have that option. So far, my d has only been given that option at one school.
Just some encouragement from a mom of a daughter going through this brutal process last year. We had no good offers going into late March. Lots of rejections and several waitlists. Daughter decided to do a couple last minute auditions and one of them was at University of West Florida. Flew down there and had a wonderful day in mid April at their last audition of year. Loved everyone we met and totally loved that staff really spent entire day trying to get to know each and every one of the auditioners (even had lunch with them). We left there on such a high that day and daughter was thrilled to get acceptance from them less than a week later. While I was convinced daughter was going to go there because everything about it was positive she ended up getting off a waitlist literally one week before the May 1st deadline and that’s where she ultimately ended up. So hang in there as it isn’t over for some of these kids until the bitter end. Shout out to UWF tho. Plz check it out if u want to do one more audition. In addition my daughters non-audition choice was amazing… Columbia College of Chicago. Visited there twice and have nothing but positive things to say about that program. Spoke to many kids in the program there and they all loved it. Also offered daughter lots of merit aid. Good luck everyone.
Today we got an acceptance to Montclair … but not to the MT program. What do we do with this? There is some fluff in the letter about “exploration” tracks and working with an advisor. Does this mean anything useful? I’m trying to reach someone in their admissions department to get more information. If she could go there and be reasonably sure of being able to declare as an MT major after the first year, we would consider it…
I’m sure I have seen lots of things on this site about similar situations, but now that I want to read them more thoroughly, I can’t seem to find those threads!
@NewEngMTMom I have never heard of Montclair taking you into MT after the fact. Usually schools that admit you academically but do not accept you into the MT program will try to weasel you into going anyway. I don’t know what an exploration track is? Lol , “yes I will explore going to another school thanks!”
Sorry a bit of humor interject there…:
I could be wrong about Montclair but my D auditioned there last year and did not get MT acceptance either & i seem to remember getting a similar letter that you got.
I had a feeling. I’m probably burnt out and out of tolerance, but I find some of the things these schools do just plain inconsiderate and even cruel.
@NewEngMTMom , I hear you! My D was rejected for Montclair’s Acting program. Their rejection letter (as,you know) says “Congratulations! We are delighted to welcome you to Montclair University! We were notified by the theater department that you were not accepted to your chosen major, so we’re accepting you as undeclared.”
I think it is unbelievably cruel to start a rejection letter with “Congratulations!” What were they thinking?
@NewEngMTMom - I would not accept anywhere that you are not completely happy with the offer in hand, including the degree track. This is because there is no guarantee that your child would audition into the program of their choice in subsequent years. There may be a possibility of doing so, but I don’t think the possibility is great to be honest. In the following year, you would be auditioning against all of the prospective freshman and transfer students in addition to any other students like yours at the school hoping to change majors. The odds are just not in your favor. It all depends on how your child will feel if they don’t get into that program after re-auditioning. If that would make them not wish to be at the school, I would not encourage them to attend there to begin with.
There are some programs where everyone auditions into the BFA after a semester or a year that you could look into. Western KY is one I can think of. @LoveMyMTGirl I think has a D there. She could perhaps tell you more. I think Columbia College of Chicago has that option as well. I am sure the CC hive on here can tell you others as well.
Wishing you all the best.
I would say forget this school just for the way they handle this situation!
@NewEngMTMom - We had something similar happen with Rider where my daughter was “accepted” to audition for a BA (applied BFA). And PACE is well-known for pursuing BFA applicants with “happy happy” calls about attending the University when they’ve been rejected for the BFA. I can’t blame the schools for wanting to encourage applicants to come to their less popular programs but yes, at this stage that that kind of deceptive notification does seem unnecessarily unfeeling.
