@NewEngMTMom I am so very very sorry. My daughter was yours 4 years ago…does she have a safety?
@bisouu if by safety you mean a non MT option, then no. If you mean less competitive schools , we had a couple and lost those right away when we found out she had to have SATs and couldn’t take them in time. She did her senior year of high school at the local community college and so did not take SATs. We thought she would be considered a transfer student. By the time we found out that MT programs don’t work that way it was too late. We have a lousy guidance department and we had no money for a professional college audition coach.
I know this is so hard…when my daughter did this her friend got in nowhere as well and had no safety. She decided to go to community college for 4 years…yes it took her 4 years to get her AA but she went through the process again this year and got into LIU, Fredonia and a few others. She is a transfer student. Lots of hugs to you and yours
We just got the BoCo rejection. No surprise there. LIU is the only one left to hear from. Gathering our mental and emotional reserves to support her through plan B … whatever that becomes…
@NewEngMTMom check out Western Kentucky University (WKU). My daughter graduates from there in May!
This is truly a brutal process. My heart goes out to you and your daughter. I doubt there is much anyone could say that would magically make you feel better right at this moment, but just know that everyone here understands how capricious and unfair this whole thing seems at times. But anyone can see that you are a great Mom and your daughter is lucky to have you in her corner. Just allow yourself and your daughter some time to grieve and then you can regroup. She will find her path!
Hi @newengmtmom I probably sound like a broken record because I keep recommending Hofstra to people who find themselves with no acceptances, but its a decent option. It has rolling admissions and no separate audition is needed for the theater department. It has a minor in musical theater. It is also a test optional school.
@NewEngMTMom Darn! Killer process. Hopefully a plan B is already coming together. Hoping for something to come through soon.
I have a friend whose daughter is having a fantastic experience at Circle in the Square in NY. There are several other excellent non-degree programs that are in no way inferior. You just have to get past the “4 year college is the only way” mentality. In the arts, that’s not a requirement.
I think the non degree programs are a really great alternate route. We didn’t really consider those last year, but in hindsight, they offer a lot of great opportunities. I believe there are also some theatre intern opportunities around the country that might be worth checking out.
I heard Tampa will still accept a video audition. Nice campus. TAlented kids. May be worth a shot. And I agree, Western Kentucky is a nice program also. Just apply and attend. Audition for the BFA once there. One of their grads was the lead in Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour. We know a couple of other Recent WKU grads who are performing consistently.
@NewEngMTMom if you’re waiting for LIU I would contact them . My daughter did their summer MT program & Dave Hugo who runs that program ( I’m assuming he still does) is really a great guy. She loved him and her time there that summer.
@theaterwork D will contact them on Monday. She met Dave and was interviewed by him and liked him very much. It turns out he is friends with some of her teachers and at this point I am hoping that even that counts for something.
my daughter knows someone planning on attending Savannah College of Arts and Design - non audition BFA in performing arts with a minor in vocal performance. Other than the emails we received, that is all I know
Time for me to pimp out Nebraska Wesleyan … I’m fairly positive they’re still accepting video submissions. If you give them a call Tuesday (no school for them Monday … lucky ducks) someone in the theatre department office will bend over backwards to help. My D adores it there … it’s a sweet little gem of a school in a great college town.
@NewEngMTMom If your daughter’s teacher knows the person at LIU, I’d consider having the teacher call Dave with another recommendation. He may be able to convey the importance of the admission and at the same time validate that your daughter is worth admitting. It’s not usually done, but I can’t imagine it would hurt.
@NewEngMTMom a safety school would have been a non-audition acting or MT program. I heard Loyola Chicago which is a non audition acting with a minor in MT is still taking apps, might be worth checking out.
@NewEngMTMom, I posted in another thread, but my daughter sent in atleast 7 video submission to schools last week and the week before as she was in a panic after 12 No’s in a row. The schools that were still accepting video submissions at that time were Nebraska Wesleyan, Western MIchigan, UAB, Univ. of West Florida, Lipscomb, Belmont and Ohio Northern.
Is anyone’s MT kid thinking of the “no college” option?
@librarygirl8 yes, definitely. Looking into other types of training like NTI, Circle in the Square, etc. Some of them look pretty appealing and a lot less costly. I got several suggestions from this thread and also the venting thread.
