No aid despite EFC

My ED school gave me no aid despite my EFC being about $10,000 less than the total cost of the college. How is that possible and how should I approach the financial aid office?

Go to a bookstore or library. Look for the USN&WR Ultimate Guide and look up your school. It probably gaps big time and you were well within the gap parameters so no money. The same happened to my son's friend with NYU.

thanx jamimom

Holly, it also gives the % of aid given and average amounts. If it looks like you got a low blow, you might want to call financial aid with this infor and let them know that you feel shafted. By knowing where you stand academically (SAT and GPA range) and the % of the merit/financial aid, you can get an idea as whether you were treated as expected by that school. If you are within range or better, then, oh well. But if not, you might bring this up.

ok, will do, thanx for the tip, i didnt know gap parameters existed, thanx again

Hollyrock, from other posts it appears that JHU is your ED school. They do state that kids who apply ED are not considered for a number of the school grants. However, it seems to me that your gap is considerable for a school that provides most of the EFC for accepted students. I would certainly bring this up, and also that to take a loan out for that amount would bring you nearly double what the govt permits in its loans for students which is pretty much a good guidleline for what kids should be borrowing.
