No AP scores until 3rd week of july...

How on earth are we supposed to choose our classes w/o knowing our AP Scores?

Anyone have experience/suggestions for this?

At orientation last year, they told the LAH kids to register based on their best estimate of what they thought their AP scores would be and drop add later if necessary if it turned out they were wrong…

but I think that really, there are so many distribution requirements, especially (in my opinion) if you are in the college of liberal arts, that I think it is easy to put together a schedule for the first semester that does not depend on knowing your AP scores.

Based on past years, UT will post your AP scores on July 1st:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/531640-ap-test-scores-available-now-claim-your-credit.html

College Board also makes them available (for a fee) by phone ~7/1. I have heard of many collegs who have the scores by late June and post them on your university account so you can register.

Yes, UT posts them on the “claim your credit” site and you can view them for free. You can get the credit for like $12/hour after that.

Some courses require you to have prereqs to register, so you want to claim that credit as early as possible, or just take classes with no prereqs.

But the registration window will be open every Friday after your orientation, so if you don’t get the classes you need the first time you can log on later and try to get them.

Ugh, I didn’t send my scores to UT because I wasn’t sure where I was going when we filled out our AP exam sheets. I’ll see if I can get that changed.

theloneranger, what do you mean by “you can get the credit for like $12/hour after that”? Does that mean that if we pass an AP exam and wish to receive college credit for it at UT then they will charge $12/hour for the class? RHE 306 would be $36 then because it’s a 3 hour class?

Anyone else know what is meant by $12/hour for credit? I would really like to know if I have to pay extra to claim the credit for AP tests.

You have to pay to claim the credit for AP tests.

Go to the UT web site www.utexas.edu

In the search box, type what you just typed: claim the credit for AP tests

Everything that pops up will lead you to the Educational Assessment and Evaluation Page, where under “current students” there is an option that is labeled “claiming credit”

If you click on this link, it will open the page that tells you how to claim credit. It says there “You will be assessed a fee of $4 per credit hour (effective June 1, 2009 the petitioning fee will change to $6 per credit hour) for the credit by examination you request to be reported to the Office of the Registrar.”

Last year, a 3-credit class cost $12. This year, a 3-credit class will cost $18.

So would it be advisable for me to claim the credit before June 1, 2009 to save the extra money? I will be a freshman this fall. The only problem is that I forgot to send my AP scores to UT last year but this year I sent them so they will receive them in July. So I don’t think I can claim any credit because on the page it only has the option for my SAT writing for RHE 306.

No, seriously, don’t claim any credits til you talk to your adviser. Just make sure UT has all of your AP and SAT II and CLEP scores so that you can quickly and efficiently claim the credits you want to claim during orientation.

You must speak to your advisor to claim the credit, and also you can’t claim the credit until UT sends the scores to your advisor.

If it only has the option for the SAT writing, you can claim that and get 3 hours out of the way, and just bring it up to your advisor at orientation, and they will let you claim your hours when UT receives them.

if you plan on taking classes at community college after your orientation, will you still be able to claim/transfer credit for it?

Yeah, you just go see an advisor whenever you get a chance to claim the credit. Or, talk to your advisor and tell her what you’re planning on taking and get permission to claim the credit.

For transfer credit, though, you don’t “claim” credit. You send in a transcript and you’re given credit. You don’t have the option to claim or not–you are legally required to take all transfer credit that you’ve earned.
