<p>I will be studying to major in computer science this fall. I knew about it before, but never found the answer (if there is one). Why is PSU's Computer Science major not accredited? Are they working towards it? Is the major not large enough to be worth it? Is it not needed due to PSU's reputation? Anybody have any idea?</p>

<p>My only guess would the that some how nationally its not technically an “engineering degree” and is simply located in the school of engineering at Penn State. The could be because most other schools might have it in, say the school of Information Sciences and Technology/etc.</p>

<p>Don’t sweat it - this comes up all the time. Relatively few CS programs are ABET accredited - the field is relatively new, and there is not even nationwide consensus about what college it should be in, Science or Engineering. Graduating from an unaccredited CS program is not a problem as long as the school itself is reputable.</p>
<p>Don’t carry this over to engineering in general, however - most engineering fields really require it to be successful, especially if licensure is an issue.</p>
<p>Ok I understand why the CS degree is not ABET certified but I have another question, are the degrees from College of Information Sciences and Technology ABET accredited? For example the B.S in Information Science and Technology (ISTBS) is accredited?</p>
<p>Could it be that Penn State’s Computer Engineering program is ABET accredited and that the Computer Science program is not considered an engineering degree?</p>
<p>@QuietType Depending on the school, computer science can be placed in either category (engineering or science). PSU decided to put it under engineering ([Academics:</a> Engineering Majors](<a href=“http://www.engr.psu.edu/future/Academics/Majors/]Academics:”>http://www.engr.psu.edu/future/Academics/Majors/)). But it does seem a bit odd that CS is the ONLY major under engineering that is not ABET accredited.</p>
<p>@cosmicfish It makes sense that it’s a newer major and accreditation is just catching on. Like you said, I’m not worrying about it. PSU’s name is big enough that it isn’t an issue. Accreditation does give that peace of mind, though.</p>
