No Computer Science@UChicago?

Hi
i am pretty confused right now. I have prepared everything to submit my application to u of c, but now I realized that u of c doesn't my dream major computer science?
I dont know why this happened, i remembered reading about computer science on their website, but now i cannot find it?
Is there any computer science related major at u of c?
Sounds strange right ;), but I'm serious

P.S.: Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm so nervous right now. The arterisk after Computer Science (on u of c's homepage) means that it is only avaible as a minor? Or does it mean it is avaible both Major and Minor?

No, computer science is offered as a major at U of C.

Go here for all the info, including the degree requirements to attain a B.S. in computer science from Chicago:

[Department of Computer Science](http://www.cs.uchicago.edu/info/undergrad)

Hope this helps!

A star means it’s both a major and a minor.

It doesn’t seem to be one of their strongest departments. Anybody agree or disagree?

CountingDown’s son is a computer science and math major. She might be able to provide some more insight on this. I’ve only personally met one person majoring in computer science, and she’s a third year, so she’s not very far into it. I’m kind of interested in it myself, so I’m trying to dig up information on it.

From reading the course catalog, I can tell that UChicago’s computer science department is more based on theory and math than a typical comp sci department. While it’s really not strong as far as computer science departments go, it’s nice in the sense that because it’s so small, the professors can provide a lot of personal attention.

Well, he’s not majoring in CS, but is taking all of his physical sciences requirements in comp sci (seven courses). They were very generous in allowing accelerated placement. S is a theory guy, so Chicago works well for him in that regard. He also spent last summer programming for a prof at MIT and is hoping to spend another summer programming for somebody this coming year. Some big CS employers (Facebook, Google, consulting firms, etc.) come to campus. If you are leaning towards the EE/hardware end of things, Chicago’s CS may not be your place. Be prepared for the math.

UChicago has sent two teams to the International Collegiate Programming Competition in the past two years (Stockholm last April and China in Feb. 2010).

cool to know, I am a theory guy too

Meh. This is where having AP credit comes in handy. I’d love to take a computer science class this year, but I really don’t have time because of all my core classes. Hopefully I can fit it in next year.

Could someone elaborate on what exactly computer science theory is? I’ve read the entire course catalog section on it, but I still feel like I’m really not getting a sense of what computer science at UChicago really is.
