I am a current sophomore in high school and I hope to major in either international Relations or political science. Although I’m in all honors/AP, my college app will be lacking one thing— the extra curriculars. All I have under my belt is varsity swim team, german club, key club, a summer program at my dream school, and a few other random things. My school doesn’t offer anything even remotely related to international Relations— no mock trial, Model UN, etc.
Because of this, I’ve been struggling to show colleges I’m truly passionate about IR. I have been teaching myself a language and I applied to a camp run by the FBI this summer (but with a 15% acceptance rate, who knows what’ll happen). What are some other ways to show I care?? Thanks for the help!!!
You’re problem is that you seem to do a lot of different things, but your ECs are kind of random. It’s good to be involved, but colleges look for quality over quantity. You can be in a lot of clubs if you would like, but when it comes time to college apps, you only want to highlight the important things. I agree with above, starting your own club would be a great idea! This will give you the opportunity to show leadership/initiative in a subject you’re interested in.
Also, how about getting involved in local politics? Volunteer for your local Republican/Democrat party, maybe try to get some sort of internship.
@h8annah thanks for the reply!! I really would like to create my own club, and I’m actually working on trying to make a Model UN club at my school. I know my ECs seems kind of random, but with 4 hours of swimming per day it’s really hard for me to do clubs because I’m required to have 100% attendance at swim.
