No experience/resume, at DePaul

Hello- I am a student that is transferring to DePaul when the next quarter starts. I have always wanted to be a writer, but I only recently started writing plays as a way to relieve stress (in the last six months). I intended to study English or History at DePaul, and I only recently found out that they have a really good drama school. Here's the problem: during high school (I graduated a year ago) I never participated in theater.

Would it be possible for me to have an interview and send in a play of mine without any recommendations from high school drama teachers or a resume? I know how ridiculous that sounds, but I'm really kicking myself for not being a thespian in high school and I'm hoping somehow, someway, I could still end up majoring in something I really love.

Will the fact that I've already been accepted to DePaul (but obviously not the Theater School) help?

EDIT: I am interested in the Playwright program in particular.

The DePaul theatre school is very, very competitive to get into the acting major. You need to go to the website and find out what is required to apply. My D has a friend majoring in Theatre Studies (I think that’s what it’s called) - and another doing Theatre tech (costume design). I don’t know if they have an undergrad playwriting major, but I’m sure the website will tell you. If you want to try acting or theatre studies, you will have to audition. Tech students have to submit a portfolio.

They do have a playwriting major- it asks for a resume. It appears I’m out of luck but I’m hoping to hear otherwise. (I’m not interested in the acting major, don’t worry.)

I don’t think your lack of theatre experience will matter at all for playwriting. Letters of rec from English teachers, enthusiasm and a good sample play should be all you need. Good luck.

Alright, thank you so much! I think I will call the theater admissions office tomorrow.

DePaul requires separate admission to the Theatre school, and does not even allow students to apply to more than one division at the university within a sincle year. I don’t know whether they allow students in the regular college to take any classes at the Theatre School - I suspect that they do not. You would have to apply as a transfer candidate, if their policy has remained the same.

If you are specifically applying for a playwrighting program, then you can put the plays you have written on your resume, together with the plays that you are currently working on. (I wouldn’t have too many unfinished plays on your resume, probably no more than two or three, and make sure you have more finished plays then unfinished plays! If you have no finished plays, just list one or two plays you are working on.)

Then in addition to that, put on your resume ANYTHING that is writing related (including English), or entertainment related.

If DePaul doesn’t accept you into thier Playwrighting program, think about casting your net wider. For example, I went to a college in Chicago that attracted LOTS of transfer students from DePaul, and they had (still have, for all I know) an undergraduate playwrighting program.

But I say go for it! What have you got to lose?
