No FA award until school moves to top of FAFSA college list

Anyone heard of this before? School today said they posted the FA offer on their web page. It was only loans and didn't include the CalGrant award

School said they wouldn't post entire offer with CalGrant until my D moved that school to the top of her college list with FAFSA!

No other school has done this on D's list, and it seems very strange.

Anyone else ever run into this before?

Very strange! Would you be willing to share which school this is? If not, at least tell us if it’s private or public. Seems a very odd thing for a state school to have done.

It’s a state school, CSU Sonoma. I definitely thought it was different!

I am not familiar with the CalGrant but when applying for it do you select what school it is for? Maybe the school wasn’t selected? I am sure the vertean posters will chime in.

Usually it does not matter what order the schools are on the FAFSA.

If it were my kid, I’d probably pitch a fit . . . but it would probably be easier just to move CSU Sonoma to the top of her list with FAFSA. ;)

How bizarre?? I wonder if that’s why my S only got one complete state school finaid last year-for the one at the top? The others were incomplete just like you described.

You can go into the FAFSA and remove all of the names except this one, and hit resubmit. Bingo first one on the list of the FAFSA that they have on file. If there aren’t any other changes and the others aren’t whiners, the others won’t need to also receive that resubmission.

That’s strange! I always listed them alphabetically when my kids were applying, just so it did not look like one school was favored over another. :)

Is this CalGrant B? I’m not an expert but have learned a few things here about CalGrants. I think with B schools pick up most of the 1st year expenses with their own grants, then B is better than A in future years. So perhaps they aren’t including their own grant until you put the school first. Still seems strange.

Could it be some kind of weird software issue at their end? In the past MD parents were advised that if they wanted consideration for any of the MD state programs, it would be necessary to make certain that at least one MD institution was on the list the first time the FAFSA was filed. If not, the state higher ed program would never get the FAFSA numbers.

Redo the FAFSA with the school up top. Some battles not worth fighting. But if it galls you enough, report it, and also complain to fin aid, once you are set with your kid’s award. It’s ridiculous, I agree, but for right now, you gotta toe the line.

We will probably just move school to top of list. The FA office has already stated this is just the way they do it

D hasn’t made final decision yet about schools because we don’t have all FA packages yet. I’m now concerned that if we mess with the order, it will mess up our other FA packages from other schools.
