Yale says it recommends taking a foreign language senior year but because the AP Spanish teacher at my school is dreadful (I’m guaranteed to not have an A in the class because of the way he ‘grades’) I’ve dropped it. Should I consider asking my gc to drop a class (AP CS) and add it back in?
No, you should take AP Spanish.
How many years of Spanish do you have?
@astute12 I have three in high school (I’m not sure if middle school counts, but I have three there too)
@sherpa I should’ve mentioned I’m interested in majoring in CS… the option should be either this or AP Stat, my bad
If you have had Spanish 4 I would say take the AP Stats course, but consult your counselor. If you have only gone up to Spanish 3, then bite the bullet and take Spanish AP…
If I understand you correctly, you’re planning to take AP CS either way but are debating between AP Spanish Language and AP Statistics. If that’s correct, I stand by by earlier advice and recommend you drop Statistics in favor of Spanish.
Might be a curveball but are there any internationally recognized proficiency tests for spanish which could be sent with your academic transcript? I’m thinking something analogous to the DELF/DALF tests for French, which also happen to open the door to French universities.
May not be enough, but if you’re dead set on not taking it, showing some level of proficiency might be better than nothing.
I agree with all the above - bite the bullet unless you have reached the 4th level of Spanish. As an aside, no college will want to know/care that you opted not to take a class because the teacher is “dreadful.” When you get to college, whether Yale or elsewhere, you might find you need a required course that is always only taught by a dreadful instructor.
Do the really want foreign language in senior year, or they want 4 years of foreign language? For the latter, it usually means completed level 4 instead of actual number of years.
Agree with @astute12 with a proviso. If you have already taken AP Spanish 4 your junior year (and gotten a A), then as long as you have another AP/Honors class in it’s place, then I would take that class. It is still showing rigor in courses taken. If you had gotten a B or lower, it would be a nice feather to show an improvement to an A in AP Spanish 5, if it is realistic. If you have only gotten up to Spanish 3, then bite the bullet. FWIW, my son got in SCEA with just AP Spanish 4 that he had taken junior year. The class was already 100% native speakers and he had to work his butt off to get an A. He opted to forego the stress senior year and took Honors Business Information instead.
Thank you all for your advice! I am currently enrolled in Spanish 4 Honors right now with a solid A, so I think I will keep Stat in my schedule for now.
