No friends at NSO...

I keep hearing about how people have the time of their lives at NSO and have tons of friends, but I don't really get along with my hall, and so I always eat alone...is there any chance of making friends after NSO?

Don’t worry, there are so many people who tell me they were incredibly overwhelmed by freshman year NSO. If your hall is not close it can feel as if you are constantly introducing yourself and are being shuffled around. It’s much easier to make friends once classes start and everyone settles down. I have friends from all over, not just from my freshman year hall by any stretch.

^ I haven’t attended any NSO events because I moved in late and will receive my Penn ID card this tuesday and just recently finished setting up my dorm. All I’ve done is tour the parts of the campus where my classes are, is this a bad idea? or does it not really matter?

If you don’t have friends by the time class starts you should transfer out ASAP.

Of course not. Of the people I met during NSO, I talked to maybe 5 or 6 of them on a regular basis (not counting my roommate/immediate hallmate) and even then I didn’t meet some of my best friends or fraternity brothers until second semester.

I try to tell everyone I can this: NSO is the most over-hyped event at Penn. It’s pretty nice as an upperclassman because you can see all of your friends you haven’t seen in a while and party with your organizations, but as a freshman I hated it. No one is really friends after what 4 days? Just don’t get too worked up over it, you’ll meet people through organizations, class, or just around on campus.

Thanks everyone…I want to get involved in extracurriculars and I’m looking forward to classes so hopefully I can make friends there. It’s tough seeing people going about laughing and talking and having fun, apparently already best friends with each other whereas I’m just by myself…this is one of the few times where I want to know who CC people are so that we can hang out lol. (now that’s desperation!)

Oh well, at least I have my books…

^ Dude you’re not alone lol, same with me since I haven’t attended anything related to NSO(I moved in late, don’t have my Penn ID yet etc). Though I’m sure after classes start I’ll meet a few people since I’ll be seeing them every day in class etc. The only thing I’ve done atm is get my dorm setup and find out exactly where all my classes are lol

I’m in Riepe-Ward 300

Those guys were friends from before they even stepped onto campus. You have to understand that a good portion of the student body at Penn, which loves its feeder
(read: consistently full-paying) high-schools (domestic and international) already had a decent amount of friends on campus before moving in and aren’t really looking to make any new friends during NSO at least.

PS: Where do you eat? I feel my house is so disconnected; I have no clue where dining halls are, or which ones serve food when. The only places I’ve eaten at so far are Beijing and Wawa lol. -.-

^ I don’t know where I’m suppose to eat either, I know I have the required meal plan from Penn but apparently I still need to my Penn ID to swipe in at cafeteria’s(btw where are the cafeteria’s lol?), but I have sufficient food in my dorm for about a few weeks anyway which my parents left for me.

@HafsaRox: Do you live off-campus? I live in the Quad and I’ve been getting brunch at Hill and food at random NSO events. Once school starts I’ll probably start getting food from Houston Hall since I have dining dollars.

@shareiunderdog: Hooray for being not alone! I’ll visit you sometime. We can talk about awesome CC stuff lol.

^ Dude yeah def visit, I need to start getting to know a few people here lol

@blorgit: Nope. I’m on-campus.

Who’s up for a CC-Penn meet-up? :p

^ I am lol (as long as it’s in the quad since getting outside of it without my Penn ID is a hassle since I’m going to get my Penn ID tomorrow morning), also when class starts aren’t we only suppose to get food from the cafeterias on campus? And Houston Hall has a cafeteria? (I have sufficient food for a few weeks anyway so I’ll probably just mostly eat that)

Lunch at Hill dining hall, Wednesday?

I don’t have a Penn ID yet either. But I got a temporary access pass. Works the same way as a Penn ID except at dining halls.

Isn’t it clubs day today? And house activities. I hope you all 3 are out there having a great time.

And as far as this id thing goes…I’m guessing you never asked your advisor/admit person or your group leader (if you’re in one) what would happen if you moved in on the weekend (no id?). Don’t be afraid to ask people…

Ended sometime ago. It was ok. Kind of a mess, I wont lie. Sorry, I’m a harsh critic. ;)

WOOOO CC meetup! I’m totally down for that lol, Wednesday at Hill for lunch sounds good tho.

lol I slept through all of the activities, but did the most important things which were order my last textbook, find where my work-study job is and finalize half of the documents, and finally get my dorm completely setup

@blorgit: it was nice to meet you sorry about having to go early, but will def meet again a lot more

Great! Now you guys can txt and FB each other and be happy…you have a friend.

Most people will make great friendships during NSO, and most people will forget all about those friendships by November. Don’t worry if you didn’t make great friends in the first week… it’s no big deal. Of course, you could also meet some of your best friends very early, but don’t worry if it didn’t happen.

Join clubs. Make friends. Be happy.

chrisw, I always love your input. Please keep posting. The most genuine advice I’ve received about Penn has been from you. Thanks for that. :)

And it’s getting better, but I still feel I got the wrong impression of Penn in April. I feel ripped off by a slick marketing campaign. But, I’ll definitely make the most of it. :)
